Anything outside of rust (like assembly or simd) is not safe-ensurable by rusts build-in, just like interfacing with c libraries in golang is not safe. I would imagine without these simd optimizations you would see a 2X slowdown at least.

Very cool efforts here. Curious what the speed is without those instructions present on the cpu, and what hardware this was run on. The concept of a fountain seems interesting but what is a good use case? Variable strength error correction?

Mongo has supported schema enforcement for a few years now, it's not used often but if you want it, it's there.

They added Json fields to mssql too, didn't make it a mongo killer.

Latest ES supports purging expiry based on a time field I believe, but before that you were creating daily/hourly indexes and haggling with elastic curator to delete them. There is also no meaningful way to do it by logical size. Elas

You and I must be the only ones on HN using mongo at scale and enjoying it. We use it as an event database which collects over 100M+ semi-structured records daily with about 200 (and growing) different schemas... It keeps 1.5TB of records i

Doesn't seem as if total entropy is increasing, simply rebalancing to the other side (which is still kind of interesting, like a wave in a pool).

TEGs are rarely over 15% efficient, and usually require 300+°C to operate. At 150C you're probably looking at traditional steam turbine for peak recovery, at this pressure you're looking at about 35% efficiency placing a potentia

Was playing around with the omnibox debug tool (chrome://omnibox) the other day, pretty cool how it inter-ranks literal search, search suggests, history into one.

I think they'd just get very strategic about the direction they launch it from the satellite. They mentioned 15 minutes in the article but that would require multiple satellites in the sky. The idea of putting rocketry and guidance sys

I'd imagine at that speed (mach 8) it spends only a few short seconds in the part of the atmosphere that is dense enough to cause it to deviate from wind. Maybe a few metres? The thing I was more curious about is how they drop it fro

A few things that need clarifying to make a fair comparison: In Canada, the government pays the benefits, and they are capped at $60,000 per year (and you only get up to 75% of that at the best case if you take a lower amount of time than 1

Few use cases I can think of: Testing across multiple .net frameworks without containers or virtual machines. It's a lot faster to initiate an app inside wine on Linux then start up a VM and launch it on Windows. I think it's eve

That's a good idea, the window search (there are many thousand skus) is service+api based though, doesn't look like archive will cache that part. Would be amusing if the API was still live though. I'll poke a bit. FYI the &qu

Most large scale pizza places will have trays full of pizza dough already prepared and sized for a single pizza. This is what I was referring to. Some places have a large roll/ball that they cut off of to make their individual pizzas.

It's generally more reproducible to measure out ingredients that could vary in density (flour being one of them, for a number of reasons) by weight. You can still be a global elitist and put it in grams.

Good and valid question. For me it's a few things. 1) the kids love putting "their" toppings on "their" quadrant of the pizza, and wow, like a lot of things in life, when you make your own there are 0 complaints. 2)
