Your numbers appear to be way off. Commercial reactor grade Uranium is enriched to less than 20% (typically about 5%) while weapons grade Uranium is closer to 90% (the first U-235 bomb was enriched to 80%). Some specialized reactors do us

That's from a study that was done after the accident. As far as I'm aware NASA never even considered a rescue mission while Columbia was in orbit. They simply assumed that if the tiles were damaged there was nothing that could b

It all depends on what kind of programming you do and what kind of math you're talking about. Some types of programming are highly dependent on math, such as 3D graphics programming, data science and machine learning. Others have les

There's far more to hardware than just designing the logic circuits (open source designs do exist such as Risc V) you also have to fabricate them and the processes for fabricating CPU's, GPU's and similar chips are probably t

80% of what you need to know to be a good programmer is best learned through programming, not course work, and the other 20% you can learn on your own from books. I only ever took one formal CS course but that didn't stop me from buil

Your examples don't support your argument very much. Export controls on cryptography were eliminated decades ago as it became clear that they made no sense and were counterproductive in a world where the Internet exists. Patents are a

My guess is that only a small fraction of HN users are going to be able to figure out what this is for without spending a significant amount of time doing a deep dive into 5G (I don't belong to that fraction, btw).

I've had a small amount of experience with this sort of thing, though not with the full blown streaming apps like OBS. For example I've written an Android App that sends video frames from a phone's camera to a remote client.

Can someone explain why neon is critical for "lasers used in chip manufacturing" ? I don't think they'd be using He-Ne lasers, and if they are I would think those could be replaced fairly easily with solid-state lasers.
