Similarly, the botanical definition of "nut" excludes basically everything we think of nuts. Pedants seemed to have learned that peanuts are "not nuts" but have yet to pick up on that almonds, pistachios, walnuts and pec

That's not what the article states, though it's not very explicit about why you shouldn't do what you suggest.

Where do you get that from the article? They even say tha the memory deficits were observed in constant darkness conditions as well (and therefore due to intrinsic clock not extrinsic light per se). Also keep in mind that mice are nocturnal

There's also Marching Tetrahedra which wasn't covered by the marching cubes patent and was kindly allowed to be used freely (and had some small improvements). [1] [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marching_tet

My first instinct would be that this is due to entropy rather than minimizing energy, but the article doesn't mention that hypothesis. Is it easy to rule this out?

Which would have been a good article, but that's definitely not all the article was saying, since the author was clearly arguing against CO2-emission reduction strategies (see the very opening paragraph).

It varies by field. Some have standard repositories for data to go in - all RNA seq experiments get their raw data uploaded to GEO or similar, for example. But they usually don't specify their pipeline sufficiently precisely to be able

The other reason to not exclude King is that it's pretty likely that Queen is the closest word to King. Then King - X + Y = Queen is just saying that X and Y are close to each other, not an interesting result.
