but detecting spam is really just a way to filter out "legitimate" popularity from "illegitimate" popularity - it's still relying on popularity as a signal for quality.

GIFs are a nice compatibility fallback, but HTML5 video should be used where possible. I think that http://gfycat.com/about does this well.

It seems primarily because his comments aren't adding significant value without mentioning his product. Take out the product, and it's basically "Awesome!". A low value comment + product mentions = spammy smell.

I think the difference is that with Mod you have to use their notebooks, whereas with these guys you can send them any notebook. That makes a huge difference for me personally.

Yeah, there's pretty decent open source consumer-friendly(ish) PGP/GPG software available. The difficulty tends to be convincing all your friends to use it (which OP took as a given).
