I feel for the people at phpfog.com, but this is a bigger blow to cloud computing. Customers who are already pretty risk averse to their data being stored in the cloud would see this as another reason not to take the risk. The cloud computi

This reminds me of another article posted on HN about how design of satellites revolved around these having to fit on ICBMs.

Ad agencies overemphasize creativity because their jobs depend on them believing that it is important. If Groupon had a direct marketing background it would have been clear that this ad needs to be tested before unleashing it. I wonder how

I was surprised they didn't request any generators from the army once theirs were knocked out. It would have saved a lot of hassle.

From the revenue numbers LinkedIn generates, I gather it prequalifies people who may want to contact you for professional purposes. Kind of a better Inbox. For example, you might try to email someone at a Uni directly, but it'll be competin

That's absolutely right. All discussions about the merits of investing in houses must be compared to something else that is available at the moment. Cash may be king now, but one needs to always be aware of inflation. I am surprised though

There is not one right rule to follow. It all depends on investment trends, the cost of maintenance, the competition for tenants. In Australia, where 98% of people live on 2% of its land, buying can make sense because it is a hedge against

Labour mobility is a relatively new concept too. In the days before nuclear families, people have large extended families to rely on for childcare, and are in a better position to look after their elderly without having to send them to a nu

Because they are in unknown territory. Modern robots work in fixed plants with fixed programming, not in a warzone. Having said that, I would imagine future plants being purpose built for ease of access by robots. e.g. less stair cases, mor

Another commenter explained it this way. You run a video site or a search engine that serves CPM ads. If you can buy PPC cheap enough, you can arbitrage and make money. PPC from Google is expensive, but there are companies that sell cheap c

There is much to be done, I'm only not sure how. Even though Japan has enough resources, to borrow a phrase from Alan Kay, help is there but it is unevenly distributed. When Brisbane got flooded earlier this year, there were a lot of friend

no, that still does not make sense. If there is a click on an adserver, where is it in this bunch of redirects?

I saw the same kind of redirects as written up. I still don't understand. Where is the money? Is this CPC or CPM fraud? It couldn't be CPC because there is no landing page served. It couldn't be CPM because there is no ad served.

I can't see how the guy could defraud CPM from the traffic he generated. They were all header redirects, so the browser doesn't load any pages, and there were no ads loaded by the browser.

Yes you are right. Apologies for snarkiness. One observation though, even the aborigines in Papua would cover up their privates in little tubes or bits of hide. I thought this surprising.

I noticed there is little difference between reddit and HN today. Could we have a way of voting for an item to be discussed at Reddit instead? We can then return the content to be more focussed on the so called "hacker" ethos.

People value things they already seen and know more than things they haven't. This is why bookmarking is always necessary. It is to aid recall.
