I think the argument of locality and linearity and cache hits is valid, but specific for one access pattern: reading items in order and adding to the tail. If that's what your code ends up doing most of the time, then an array wins ove

EFI must be a separate partition, right. But why should /boot? Mine is just a directory in the root filesystem.

Sorry but "provide more virtual resources than you physically have" isn't another way to say "overcommit"?

Few people understand that if...then in bash is actually a form of try...catch. The -e terminates the script at every failure not caught by a try...catch. With this in mind, it's easier to predict bash's behavior.

Isn't it the other way out? The logistic curve becomes denser close to 0 and 1. Which makes sense: you will want to tell apart 1 defect per million from 0.01 dpm, and 5-sigma process (99.977%) from 6-sigma (99.99966%), much more than t

I still don't get it. You don't know what users select as UI font, how can it be universal? On the other hand, you do know what font they like for text, but decide to ignore it and serve them text rendered in what they selected fo

Sorry if I've misunderstood your post. The parent article was about replacing dense code with more lines of simpler syntax. I assumed you were in the shorter-is-better camp and willing to prove it with your example, where shorter undou

I don't get this: > font-family: system-ui Why render texts with the font that the reader has selected for a different function, ignoring the one that she has selected for texts?

Kernighan wrongly assumed that to do something twice as hard, you need someone twice as clever. Most probably you need someone just as clever and twice the time. It's a brilliant quote, though.

Your example is artificially designed to make your point, but imagine a case like this: # Add the left & right margins width = calculatedWidth + 1 + 1 The "+1+1" might indeed be more readable than "+2".

In English, the colon is used to separate a term to its definition, so it looks perfectly apt to mark declarations. Besides, it makes it trivial for text editors to implement "go to definition", and many other niceties without a r

There are people who can remember the cards already played during a poker game. I cannot. This is massively asymmetrical, but it doesn't allow me to peek at the next card in the deck before bidding.

But wait... x+=y is equivalent to x=x+y not to x=y+x. Only if + is commutative, then the three are equivalent. Are we sure the + operation is commutatve for this type of data? And does the compiler know it? It would be interesting to check

AIUI, they didn't inject code, just mangled the stack to hijack the execution flow towards specific code fragments ("gadgets") already in the executable memory.
