Just one example: I can't have Acrobat as the default PDF reader for longer than an update cycle. It gets reset to Edge.

We can only speculate on what hardware Ken Thompson likes most, or what annoyed him about macOS, he didn't tell. The article only deals with your question #3, and the answer is yes, everything's working. As of the fourth question,

Yes. The mistake is to only hash the data of the previous block. You should hash the whole previous block, including prev.prev.

I'm going through the handbook and some things don't seem satisfactory. Division always yelds a floating-point number, so the following doesn't work, you have to explicitly use floor(): min = time / 60 sec = time %

I don't understand why the article lists 4 issues, when 2 of them were solved in 2019: > pidfd is a great solution to the third and fourth problems So why talking about them? Is it just for proving the superiority of the author'

Allowing arbitrary number of children doesn't come for free. You might need a linked list, which is a waste of memory and access time if you always just use up to two elements. What most parsers do is to provide exactly 2 slots, aptly

An Abstract Syntax Tree, where each node can have zero children (e.g. a literal value), one child (unary operator like 'Not') or two children (a binary operator like +).

I think the Language Grammar section doesn't correctly report the grammar you have implemented. For example the "if" and "while" statements lack the condition!

If you had never heard about C and its legacy, and were to create your own programming language, would you come up with a syntax like C's? The structure 'term: definition' is pretty common in many natural languages and has a

The principle applies to all kinds of structures. For example a common way to implement a generic tree that respects this rule is to model each node with exactly one parent and any number of children. My statement instead is that you ma

I'd say that 2 is indeed quite common in Computer science. In graphs, for example, each edge has 2 ends. In an abstract syntax tree, a binary operator has 2 children. All raster images are based on 2 dimensions. A "for each"

Fascinating! How do you sign your kernel every time you recompile it? Do you need to store a new key into the UEFI every time?

If foo() happily accepts a number instead of a Prime, then this is not robust enough: you can always forget the check! It's the compiler that should warn you about a wrong type.

You don't use this technique to define a new array, but to get a pointer to an array you already have. The goal is to have a pointer to the array, and not a pointer to the first element of the array. Whether this is "nicer" o

The mistake in the article was a ")" slipped before "== 0". Exactly the same mistake can happen in your code. Your extra parentheses won't make it less likely.

Same here, except I fine-tuned the kernel to boot under 10 s. Of course it can't run all today's bloated software, but we're talking about the operating system, here, not the applications.
