One of my most fascinating reads of all time was "Brave New World Revisited" (1950s I think), a follow-up of "Brave New World" (1920s I think) by Aldous Huxley. Similarly, the point then was how the mass media and TV wou

What if, in the event of a tie (just Alice & Bob), we always decide to trust Alice. Would that not improve our probability of guessing the tie correctly, i.e. back to 80% success?

I bought a kobo for myself about 18months ago and I'm hooked. I have since bought two more for gifts and 3 friends have bought them on my recommendation. I have never before been such a vocal (if unintentional) ambassador for a tech ga

Hmm, sorta similar for me except my normal is only one cup per day. Every now and than (say every few months), I get up to two, then soon three cups per day and I start getting migraine. Then I think to myslf, "boy, I gotta quit coffee

I also think not a hope, check Brandolini's law[1]: The amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than that needed to produce it. [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brandolini%27s_

I'm not knowledgeable enough -- what would it take to escape the Apple/Google duopoly? I'm imagining a future where you buy a smartphone and when you do the first configuration, it asks you which services provider you want to

This seems the most concise and precise answer to the question of "why". At some stage, somehow, self replicating molecules appeared in the primordial soup*. Everything since then has just been improvements (or maybe complete over

IIRC it is possible to have some clever encryption so that the person you sent your message to can prove to their own satisfaction that it came from you, but they cannot prove to anyone else that it came from you. Which gives you plausible

Just wait until AI is advanced enough that you can buy an AI best friend who will be with you all your life. I'm reminded of Decker's AI hologram friend in Blade Runner 2049. The only thing they got wrong was she was not collectin

That's a fair question and I've not done the math. Does "overall cost" include long term usage - I suppose it does or it wouldn't be "total". For example, I spent a bunch of money to install solar panels,

Oh! You're right, I hadn't realized. But... wouldn't it be more efficient with a heat pump and exploit the 2-4x COP? Ok, maybe I get it now: heat pump wouldn't work at the high temps they are achieving. Thx.

I really can't help but think there might be a fundamental problem here. If heat loss in dirt is so incredibly slow, and we use a heat pump to extract that heat, then wouldn't it be equally slow to replace the heat extracted? (

Interesting. Given that the horseshoe shape is due to gravitational lensing of one far off galaxy ~19 Gly away by another "only" 6 Gly away, wouldn't that mean that any motion of those galaxies, or our galaxy, would realign t

I'm inclined to agree here. LLMs do not use just a paragraph here and there in accordance with fair use, but rather uses the entire body of work to train itself. Or am I misunderstanding something about LLMs?

Indeed. It's a certainty that Mars is far far less hospitable than Earth even in the worst of the climate change outcomes. I suppose the most useful thing about colonizing Mars would be for species survival - e.g. the Giant-Asteroid-St
