I think you'll see increasing numbers of Canadians working for US companies (that's already happening). Of course that's little different than hiring from areas in the US outside the major hubs. Somewhat lower average salari

No, but I might include a general note on alignment. And rarely is literally everything going to be aligned down the left side of the page, so you could also include some annotation to show what's aligned to what (and maybe why). I

You're just talking about different time periods. IE was innovative back when it supplanted Netscape. Then it stagnated.

Your comment was the first one related to that rule I read, and I'm a good way down the page. Maybe you just happened to see the comments early on when a discussion on that happened to be at the top.

Good learning experience, though one might argue that the original design should have noted those sorts of important aspects, rather than expecting them to be obvious. Probably would have saved you both some effort.

I don't know about that. If the boat is moving and you're left stranded then yes, of course. If you fall off a stationary boat in warm weather and climb back on though, your destroyed phone might be at the top of the list of con

I doubt literal survivorship bias plays much of a role, given the number of people who actually die this way is tiny. Maybe that was a joke though. The XKCD issue would be more common though - people who are happy with it because they'

Good point. We've always been all remote, so I forget about that one, but I'm sure it's significant! When I started it was just me, and then just me and a friend of mine, so obviously didn't make sense to get an office

True, but it's still a net benefit for good companies. And it's not like it means you're competing with FAANG on every hire. There are far more developers out there (including very good ones) than those companies can employ

I'm glad you included that last line. I agree with you that managing a remote team or running a remote business has challenges that an in-person one doesn't. (I've been running AutoTempest with an all-remote team for almost

I think your "of course" is glossing over too much. It is very, very far from a given to me that GAI is required in order to solve self-driving cars well. I think it's reasonably possible we'll have good self-driving c

Even if one didn't accept that AGI will eventually be developed, I agree with you that "never" is too strong. Computers perform many tasks now that were once unthinkable, and I'm pretty confident they'll eventually

We've been doing almost all of our team meetings (ranging from 5-8 people) over Slack for the past number of years. They're both faster and more productive than the video chat meetings we used to have, and leave a written record.

You can only do that if paying cash. And if you do, what will effectively happen is that the money you intend to leave as tip will go toward the fee instead.

Part of the problem is that an expectation of tipping is cropping up in many places where it didn't exist before, and prices certainly haven't dropped 20% to compensate. In these circumstances I would rather just pay 100% of the p
