Grids are a subset of ordering mechanisms. I use ordering mechanisms (including grids) often as an architectural designer. Ordering mechanisms are a useful tool for nearly all design processes (and an ordering mechanism need not be geometri

This is rubbish. > The first thing that jumps out is that the layout lacks structure. This 12 column grid is superficial, at best. All the author did was equalize the padding of like elements. The structure of this page -- yes, it has s

That's the problem with raw data like this. It's easy for you to look at a couple pages, find some examples, and make a blanket statement like that. Start at the last page (with the default still >$100k) and go through a few hundred pag

I'm now finishing my masters degree in architecture (undergrad was physics of the liberal arts variety) and spend nearly every day coding. Processing is a great environment, although architects increasingly prefer the Grasshopper add-on to

> You can't design properly for a medium which has limitations you don't understand. Spot on. But it's not just understanding the limitations of a given medium, but its capacities as well. For instance, the web's capacity to scroll:

Go to any medium to large architecture firm. You will find 20% of the employees doing "big idea" design. They don't use AutoCAD. You will find 80% of the employees (who wish they were the other 20%) implementing the designers "big ideas" in

There are a number of programs, but most designers I know prefer Rhino (rhino3d.com) and the Grasshopper (grasshopper3d.com) plugin. Rhino is now adding Python (and OSX) support, but they still have a ways to go.

Awesome! As I replied further down, I think we're at different ends of the industry. BIM needs are amazingly complex, and you're right about all of the functionality that is needed. But for my end -- designers that depend almost entirely on

I'm taking the view of an avant-garde designer in a firm that has a separate team of drafters to implement designs and construction documents. My focus is on the conceptual design phase, so I simply have different needs.

Most 3D modelers are solid modelers (i.e. I construct a solid cube or sphere). When I aggregate many of these solids together (and possibly do some boolean operations to them), I have a design. Now I would like my 2D cuts. By this, I mean I

A step in the right direction, I suppose. But as a hacker and an architecture grad student, no industry infuriates me more than the architectural software industry. If you're looking for a new startup idea and you can build a cross-platform

On my way back from Santiago two months ago, I sat by an American who operated a group home / missionary. He claimed he pays approximately $300 USD per year on a ~$600,000 property. But I believe their VAT is fairly high (for US standards)

Thankfully my municipality does allow me to monitor dosage: http://www.city.milwaukee.gov/water/about/WaterQuality.htm For 2009, the highest fluoride levels were 2.06 mg/L and the median level was 0.77 mg/L. So there's at least one data p
