I've left two companies over ethical concerns, but it's not as easy for most people implied here. Losing income can be challenging, especially if the industry is in a downturn.

I haven't actually dug into it myself, so it could just be that marketers or journalists got mixed up somewhere.

It's worth noting that some of the victims of this died before it came out. To say this ruined lives is an understatement. It's also important to know that the UK government knew about the flaws with the program but covered them u

New Hampshire is on the national grid. If they have more power than they can use they simply sell it to Massachusetts so they can turn down some of their natural gas generation.

To be clear when I said 0.11/kWh in Chicago I was giving the total price, including both the supply and delivery. California has some ridiculously expensive power costs. I moved to Chicago in 2021 after living in the bay area for 11 ye

Where do you live with power costs that high? My power is about 11c/kWh (Chicago).

This just isn't true. The burden on nuclear is the extremely long construction time and massive cost overruns.

In my experience your company is doing it right, and doing it the way that other successful companies do. I gave a talk at the Open Source Summit on MLOps in April, and one of the big points I try to drive home is that it's 80% softwar

I absolutely hate conda. I had to support a bunch of researchers who all used it and it was a nightmare.

It's not about "yucky" so much as specialization and only having a limited time in life to learn everything. Should your reseacher have to manage nvidia drivers and infiniband networking? Should your operations engineer need

Yup! I used to use it, but was very disappointed in how little support it got and ended up dropping it. It's a great idea but never got enough resources to take off.

Do you understand what the problem trying to be solved is? There are satellites in orbit today that have nothing to do with Starlink. Some of these have been up for a long time. We're talking weather satellites and research satellites.

▲

Again though, you can't do "Starlink from the satellites, so we don't rely on a specific ground station" unless all of the satellites support talking to Starlink, which they don't. That means they'd have to be

That would require replacing all the satellites with new ones capable of doing that, which doesn't seem feasible. Starlink also doesn't have great coverage of the polar regions.

Starlink has an upload speed between 5 and 20 Mbps. The Svalbard cable is a 10Gbps link. It's still a major difference. That said apparently they do have a satellite backup, just not through Starlink.

You're grossly underestimating the bandwidth needs of the site. You're not going to replace a cluster of fiber optic cables with Starlink.

Agreed. We really need some sort of regulation that prevents companies from bricking devices they sold. It's just so unethical, and wasteful, to put these devices out there and then just turn them into trash.

I have worked for multiple startups (Malwarebytes, Vicarious, Rad AI, Explosion AI, Aptible, Kenna Security). Not once have I seen an exit agreement that stated they would steal back my vested equity if I didn't sign. This is definitel
