That's a good point, but I think the idea of "Singulitarians" (for lack of a better term) is that your iPhone or other new gadget won't be invented in years, months or weeks, but hours or minutes. A human brain simply can't keep up. Of cour

Well, I don't think anyone can argue that if we create an AI smarter in nearly every way than any given human, several or a large amount of those AIs could create an even smarter AI, and so forth recursively. The only question is if we inde

This is a somewhat obstinate and perhaps nonconsequential point, but as a public service announcement, could anyone who reads this please do their best to assure the title of their story is grammatical and spell-checked? If the 37signals ar

I disagree. Read my post again, I added two paragraphs. It's very useful behavior, in fact (imho). It preserves the nature of the community quite effectively (albeit at the expensive of causing temporary upset).

It is not ridiculous, since people aren't downmodding to express a difference of opinion about what the person said. They are downmodding to assert they do not want to hear any political opinion on Hacker News, because--as has been said--th

Not to mention, there are a lot of people who don't care about the medium, but rather the price (e.g., college students). I know if an e-book was priced $8 versus the $10 paper version, I'd go with the $8 for pretty much any book. It wouldn

I also wonder about the physics -> CS part. What about the quantum mechanical nature of the electromagnetic forces governing electronic components used to build computers, like transistors? That would really make this complete.

Could this mean an open-source alternative to Loopt? I suppose not, since Loopt is much more exact. Can Google only give a rough circle of several hundred feet, or a quite precise location?

Thanks, that's exactly the kind of comments I was looking for. That was exactly what I thought in my head, but it came out very distorted and ugly on paper. I'll update the solution later. Do you want credit?

I use Lypha for my PHP/Perl hosting. They have the most featured, spaceous, and bandwidth-plenty service I've ever seen for a price like $4/month, and I haven't seen a downtime in months (not to mention the support is great). Get Dreamhost

You can still read through my solutions and point out all my errors if you like, though. ;) I've already had a couple classes, but I've never felt intimately comfortable with it. With several programming languages, I don't even need the occ

That'd be great! I'm planning on spending a few weeks full-time on this (8 hours a day, or more if I can handle it). That should be a minimum of one section a day, but hopefully more, even a whole chapter on some days. It doesn't matter how

To me, it seems PHP is the Windows of web languages. In many respects it "sucks", can be clunky, and has little to no elegance from a formal perspective, but it's everywhere and everyone knows how to use it. Thence lies its success. (howeve
