Agreed. I've been wanting them and used them just a small amount thus far. There's some rough edges that will likely be smoothed out over time. All in all, they're a welcome addition and quite easy to ignore if you don't

I wonder if AWS will ever increase this limit. I would love to know why they haven't yet or why they never will.

Carbon offsets are like recycling plastic. The better alternative to recycling plastic is not producing and buying stuff made out of plastic in the first place.

Heroku is a dying platform. It's a good time to get started on a migration plan. I have friends who argue that Salesforce has neglected Heroku for a while so this shouldn't be much of a surprise to anyone now. I haven't used

Not only RSUs but stock options as well. I've always pushed/leaned/fought for a higher base over more options. I prefer a bird in the hand. However, if your timing is good and risk tolerance is high, taking more options over

I mean yes. . . premature abstraction driven by premature optimization. Or more simply, solving a problem you don't have now, and might not ever have. Everyone talks FAANG scale on day 1. It's common and absurd.

I love that the author ends the post by coining a new buzzword. It's like that XKCD about standards. Also, for those of us who have been around the block, we remember the Old Ways and I for one don't miss all the shitty parts of t

At my first company, our builds happened whenever the release engineer (he was friends with the milk man and chimney sweep) felt like "doing a build". As another example, CI/CD adds a lot more work and maintenance but it resu

This is a good point, but I'd say that's just the ops version of premature optimization.

This times one million. Back in 2005 there would have been so much shit you wouldn't even dream of doing and a lot of things you did do, you sure as shit wouldn't do now. . . we used to write our cache systems. Migrations were all

Years ago, I rode from Boston to Seattle (with a nontrivial and unplanned detour through Canada) by myself. I may never do another cycling tour again (for a number of reasons) but it was one of the greatest experiences in my life. It all st

Agreed 100%. I've used a bunch of languages over the years: C, C++, C#, VB, Perl, Java/Groovy/Kotlin, Javascript, Lua, Ruby, PHP, Python and Go. All fairly mainstream and I'm not going to start railing on the ones I don&

Just went through a round of interviewing. . . it's laughable how the coding interviews go. I did well on some, OK on others and bombed a few too. Yet, in every case, the interviewers put so much weight and faith in the coding challeng

Auth0 or Okta and yes, neither is AWS native but they are much better authentication services. Okta acquired Auth0 about a year ago so I expect some consolidation of features at some point but as far as I know that has not happened yet.

Cognito is one of the worst. Try the CloudHSM sometime if you're not feeling suicidal. The whole Amplify/AppSync stack is another massive tire fire.

What's interesting to me is that a few of the people I know how were AWS "long haulers" are massive assholes. It's almost like the kind of person who makes it there is not the kind of person I want as a colleague.

I'm guessing that you don't quite have enough to really commit too much to this, but have you considered spinning up a new start up? I've been working at startups for decades but haven't been in the right place at the ri
