I think the title refers to cork's monopoly as a bottle seal rather than any particular producer's monopoly on cork.

I don't know where this presumption comes from that Trends numbers are an accurate proxy for such-and-such metric. Even the more skeptical posts here seem to admit that Trends for "twitter" vs. "facebook" would mirror those services' marke

Agreed. Not to mention countless other problems with using Google Trends numbers as a proxy for "market adoption".

Zen Coding seems like the Haml philosophy implemented as code completion rather than as a run time compiler. The upside is that the markup you generate is plain old HTML that any web framework can serve. The downside is that it has the re

Unfortunate for PowerPoint that it's become synonymous with idioms like "mindmapping" and the bullet point, which seem to be the devices this piece is really raging against. I see PowerPoint as a quite unconstrained way to present an series

This piece is nearly devoid of information. What are "media", beside the examples given? Are textbooks included, for example? How many students experienced withdrawal symptoms, and how were those symptoms measured?

I gather from the interview that Myers doesn't qualify for a North Korean library card, so the books he's referring to are probably available in the North Korean Information Center in Seoul, the Natation Archives in DC, or the Library of Co

Any Ruby vs. Python comparison here is probably tainted by the fact that Rails often becomes "Ruby and Rails" or even just "Ruby" in recruiterspeak. You don't see a lot of reqs for "Python and Django" or "Python and Tornado".

This article neither advocates a high nor low confidence level. The point is that your confidence level is meaningless if you don't fix the sample size. "...when your gut tells you something is true, it probablly is." If you run a data-dri

I'm curious, is there a lottery-based alternative to TicketMaster? Or an option to use lottery rather than FCFS within TicketMaster? If not, I think that would be a great project for a handful of enterprising engineers. There would be som

Agreed; it's exactly the same principle as a flipbook or movie projector. Though it seems arbitrary that those things have ceased to be seen as optical illusions.

It's a simple algorithm, and you could carry it out by hand in an image editor without much difficulty. Just overlay N layers (the frames of your animation) on top of one another. For every Nth column of pixels, delete the next N-1 columns

Incidentally, in the specific case of colorblindness, I think the abovementioned type of awareness is starting to permeate the industry. You can especially see the results in games, which sometime include a colorblind-friendly display mode

I wish this article would get past the "disabled people don't use computers" straw man (at least, I hope none of OP's technical friends really espouse that) and address the reasons that designers marginalize accessibility in real decisions.

If people really do want to manage papers like they do music, I hope the eventual upshot is something like an iTunes Store for journal articles. I often want to purchase an individual paper that I'm interested in, but the going rate for a

I'm interested to know, under what circumstances would a barter system like this benefit its participants, given that they can already exchange these services using cash? The primary advantage of barter seems to be sidestepping taxes, and j
