The cases cited in the story are more in line with bureaucrats maintaining budget. By that I mean you have an agency that needs to justify their budget of X dollars with Y convictions to show for it. It's hard to imagine any of the agents

A nice article on two points. 1. A good explanation of something I had wondered about. 2. A technical level above "History Channel popularization" but below PhD dissertation. Is it just me or does it seem like articles at this level are ve

A lot of comments have pointed out that there are problems with the metric used in the article. Still, the differences aren't measured aren't off by 20 or 30 percent. Some states have 10 times the amount of venture money as others. Clear

Quick summary - from the article: "If you would not pay for medicine out of your own pocket, then don’t bother to go when others offer to pay." Overall a well argued article.

My understanding of Friedman's position was that the negative income tax was a politically viable (if unlikely) system that would be an improvement (more freedom, less socialism) over the social programs we currently have. Not that he thou

You might want to check out Applied Cryptography by Bruce Schneier. It explains how to dice as well as cards over a network without being able to cheat. It also goes into many other areas in great detail.

The point of the article isn't that IQ differences don't exist. Only that on average how hard you work is much more important than how smart you are in achieving success. At least in the measures used in the article - graduate degrees and

Kind of like most of the rest of us. I remember watching eBay's IPO and thinking I should get some of that - but not doing it. Then setting out on my own in late 1999 only to get crushed in the bubble. Seems like I've been following the
