Hear, hear. I already have a general-purpose programming language that allows me to do most things relatively trivially. I want to know why I should add Haskell to my toolbox, not replace my perfectly good hammer with it. For instance, I le

Everybody complains about the UI -- but it's domain registration! How often do you really use the UI? A couple times a year, maybe? GoDaddy is super cheap and reliable (for domains). Until somebody makes something better (and equally cheap)

As someone who beta tested this numerous times, I can tell you this is some ridiculously slick virtual meeting software. It reminds me of the Microsoft Surface a bit, the way you can manipulate stuff in and out of focus and so on. Very cool

Because the code that generates HN pages was written in the laziest and least-accessible way possible.

zsh is rather amazing. Only so if you are familiar with how it is better than bash (besides the fundamental ways) and how to configure it for maximum ownage! Much like complicated editors like Vim, it helps to try to dedicate effort to impr

Oh, IS THAT ALL? Talk about living on the bare essentials! America isn't suffering from a recession, it's suffering from a populace that has no sense of responsibility or reality who just so happened to need a recession to point out their i

Better than <insert sensationalist blanket statement to insight linkbait>. How about, Cloud Computing Making Dedicated Hardware Obsolete For Some . Was that so difficult? Took me 10 seconds.

I meant the good kind of lazy, so yeah, I wasn't really trying to insult you. Also, the idea that "some" people still do C therefore memory management isn't obsolete for most people is clearly flawed. As flawed as the absolute claim, "Clo

Your analogy makes sense, but it is as broken as the central idea in this piece, and they're both so for the same reason: Despite high-level languages, memory management is still very much a reality for many programmers. People still write

Christ, I'd rather pay the $400. A 2-year mobile brandband contract is practically useless for anything but very light usage, since the monthly limits are usually about 5GB. I don't really plan to buy a Crunchpad, but you'd think we'd been

I wish I had some ideas, I honestly do. All I know is that [I feel] the current system is woefully broken. How to fix it can be left up to smarter men than I.

That's a broken analogy. All domains start off costing the same. An apartment in times square always costs more than a 5-bedroom in Iowa, and for very tangible reasons. If I buy abc.com for a million dollars, it's not like that domain is in

I think a vast majority of the current problems would be fixed by auto-releasing squatted domains. There are no good domains left because they've all been squatted. They're hardly all taken up by actual sites.

Step 3: Install Keychain ( http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/keychain/ ), so you can actually use a passphrase like a smart person and not have to deal with ssh-agent and ssh-add nonsense.

The strategy of only doing it because you have to is one which probably allows for more sustained imbalance and lack of perspective (since the business is everything and must be done , etc.), but I think it is short sighted to believe

I found the only time this was remotely rewarding was when I noticed I hadn't checked HN for an entire day because I was just too wrapped up in work. Plus, I have way too many browsers installed for a Firefox addon to ever stop me. I don't

That wouldn't matter. After a voicemail is received, compare its attributes to recently missed calls. If there was a missed call from the same number that left the voicemail, chances are good the recent highlight can be removed.

The "1984 take-back" was a huge blunder, but it didn't affect my copy of 1984, so the blanket statement that they're becoming "too powerful" seems a bit alarmist. The gay/lesbian book delisting was a clever hack and only made me laugh. I
