Having moved continents last year, I think this is very apparent. European morning stores are the day/evenings of the US, and then like you say, between 2 and 4pm the active stories are more highly variable, as the US wakes up.

I'm in the same boat, but I use miniconda and install the individual packages I want as I need them, which helps minimize the size. For doing scientific analysis, it is really nice to have (basic) environment which has the basic requir

I think your point was very well made, but to satisfy the people who comment on the energies required for phase change etc., you could just change it to very small temperature delta/difference, and be perfectly fine.

It is dangerous to speak to others allusions, but I believe both that HN moderators/YC had nothing to do with the strength of the thread, and also that YC or YC affiliated companies occupy more of the HN consciousness than other compan

I do scientific programming in both Python and Matlab. The two things that to me are major benefits of Matlab are the ease of setting up your installation, and the documentation. The Matlab documentation is amazing when compared to the nump

Some interesting quotes (can be found in other accounts as well): For Mr. Cook, the focus on Asia “came down to two things,” said one former high-ranking Apple executive. Factories in Asia “can scale up and down faster” and “Asian supply ch

Isn't that the idea behind (academic) conferences? Bringing together everyone in a field to meet new people/network, and also learn from talks and poster sessions is the motivation. There is something I've found fundamentally

Technical PhDs are funded positions via grants, you most likely cannot just search for available scholarships. Very few technical PhDs are on scholarships, as they're usually more complex than just being funded by your advisor. The typ

I did Denver -> SF this past summer and it was absolutely unreal. I was extremely happy I did it, the sights were gorgeous, and it was an awesome time to just sit and think while some of the West's most gorgeous scenery passes by.

That's a pretty good question, so I looked things up a little. Casting, especially on pieces this big, is difficult. It has problems with chemical segregation due to temperature gradients in the material, as well as porosity from the d

I'm a fairly recent PhD, but on the whole I had a very positive time. It took some time to figure out what I wanted my research to be, and that was the most stressful part (first two years/in conjunction with a Masters). After tha

This thread has convinced me to try to switch, but one thing that I love in Mendeley is the ability to watch a folder, and have any pdf in that folder automatically imported into my account, which then gets synced across devices. That, and

I used Overleaf for my PhD thesis without any issues, including a lot of figures, etc. In fact, I almost only use Overleaf when it comes to LaTeX - it takes care of most of the pain points and is a great service that I pay for.

Yeah, not the OP, but if I had sensitive information I don't know what I would do. I know this sounds shill-like, but I absolutely love Overleaf for Latex. It has every package you need, decent templates that you can then customize, an

The definition that I have always stuck with is that a sandwich has leavened bread on two sides of whatever is in the sandwich. Therefore, hot dog is a sandwich, a taco is not, etc.

Fun idea - very back of the envelope math is if you could convert energy into strictly breaking CO2 bonds, the amount of energy it takes is 805 kJ/mol (from Google). WolframAlpha says this is roughly the caloric content of a biscuit, o
