Do people post this stuff just to earn karma points? What use would this half-thought through data set provide? and who would use it? Can we NOT repeat the same polls again? I suggest creating a Hacker News 'polls' section which lists a per

Exactly. In addition, keeping passengers calm and relaxed is also a key point of security - roudy/drunk/agressive or even violent passengers can cause a lot of trouble on a flight when there are relatively few, fairly untrained flight atten

exactly, I find navigating a vertical list much less 'stressful' than trying to understand the ordering of a matrix while trying to digest the actual product info. Also the eye is attracted first to the product images then moves naturally t

Fantastic article - thanks for writing this - it is exactly how I feel about UI and the dissapointment that generally follows anything these days that is claimed to be "innovative".

Not really sure what problem this solves. I could imagine something like this from college students, but with the resources Yahoo has I expect bigger, game changing technologies. The only Yahoo technology I use for web development is the YS

Regarding deleted data: there are clearly two concepts of 'deleted' a). deleted in terms of the application/user interface (ie, it is no longer visible) and b). deleted in terms of physical removal from all permenant storage. Clicking on a

Yes, I pretty much agree with this. I am sure many IT companies could technically be in trouble with the Data Protection Act in the UK alone for very similar breaches as Facebook and I am sure many companies would not even be able to provid

Absolutely. I am at a loss as to why people use Java for Internet facing sites and apps. Of all the things Java 'should' be used for (embedded apps and desktop applications) it gets most used for the one thing it wasn't designed for - the w

Actually, I think your last sentance exactly highlights my point (I dont know how to do that italicy/quote thing). Whether you choose to write your code in Java or Javascript doesn't matter because it will HAVE to be run in a Javasript envi

Javascript is interpreted. Which actually highlights my point that languages (of any level) have usually been designed to solve a particular set of problems or targetted for a particular type of runtime environment. Thus, the likelihood is

EVERYTHING is wrong with GWT - just dont use it. Generally I believe the idea of writing code in one language to be converted into another is wrong. Languages are tools to do a job - pick the right one for the job or it will end in tears.

I think this is a very interesting idea and things like a 'group' or an 'event would simply have their own private/public key to allow subscribers etc. But two thoughts spring to mind: 1). Without the marketing/advertising opportunity, who

Well as nobody tought the founders to Google, Facebook or Microsoft to program a computer - especially at school, there is absolutely no logical reason to teach kids such a specific skill. The programmers I know, and notable the better ones

If the code compiles and does what it is supposed to do, then the answer is that nothing is 'wrong' with it. Writing code that does what it is supposed to do is often not the challenge of software engineering - but writing code that can be

I disagree! It does not make sense that submitting any text via a form input should in any way interfere with a templating engine, in the same way we dont expect to be able to affect a database by entering SQL into a form field. The fact th

It wasn't necesarily a bad idea to compete with Flash, but SilverLight was about 10 years too late and offered no reason for the entire world to switch from Flash. Thus, the end of SilverLight was just a question of 'when', not 'if'.
