They help me. At least the physical, paper ones do. I keep my days on track by taking time in the early morning and reviewing the previous days accomplishment/misses/notes and then writing down an outline of today's goals and

Netflix is particularly egregious but yeah there are postings with ranges like $150K-400K all over. 250K is an incredible swing imo.

I hope the next step is narrowing the ranges of "info" provided. You'll sometimes see postings like "Sr Staff Engineer at [fancy corp]: 135K-900K". Info like that is better than nothing, sure, but not by much.

This reminded me https://www.wheresgeorge.com/ in the USA has been doing it a while as well. Had no idea it was still going strong all these years later.

Maybe it's cleaned up since the early 00's. We were over near Rocky Mountain. I should have been more precise re: break-ins, meaning more car break-ins. No idea what the home rate was, but every other week there were 1-2 cars miss

Ah Home Park. Part of the circle of life for tech students. 1. enroll. 2. get tired of dorm life. 3. move to home park because it's likely all you can afford. 4. get broken into 5-10 times. 5. move away

What's with the indignation over this on HN? I didn't see them suggesting anyone/everyone would be able to do it, or that it was practical. It was just a funny set of cirucmstances that allowed for an attention catching headl

Fair. Should have been more specific about meaning the shirt sponsor.

Sponsorless kits look so good. I wish that was the norm. The financial realities of the modern game make that a pipe dream though.

On a story by story basis saying points=time is an idea as silly as your deliberate misinterpretation of my post, yes.

The answer is not having a PHB. No non-unit-of-time estimation system will matter if there isn't buy-in from all levels. If the Directors/VPs/C-Suite etc view development in assembly line terms, then Xpoints = Ytime can never

Whoa whoa. The "association" OP speaks of is down to effective marketing - creating a common image of German product/industrial design as meticulous and high performing - not some objective engineering ranking.

I think this is broadly the case. A few companies might be genuinely invested in improving performance with such a plan but for the majority it's a way of managing someone out. Over the years I've seen over 30 devs put on PiPs. 1

If you're a small enough team, this doesn't matter. But if someone else - whether a single dev or another team - depends on your work then you run the real risk of being a bottleneck to other people and the business. At that point

The author is perfectly justified in wanting to solve what they see as a problem. However Chesterton's Fence is ever-present in my mind. So I can appreciate the effort behind redesigning/solutioning but my instinct is to try and

Correct. They're often already playing at ~95% engine matching moves and/or with negligible difference in centipawn loss. Getting the help to push that to 98% would be a dominant advantage. Funnily (to me) post-game analysis often

Are you sure OP's use of "dangerous" wasn't around the implications of fully autonomous, no-human-intervention nature proposed in the article, and not the blatantly literal destructive nature of all war machines?
