In "modern" stacks it is preferable to do things like layouting of formulas millions of times on the clients, instead of once on the server. I guess that sort of thing needs JS.

Cloudflare really doesn't make much of a difference for HN. The last front page traffic I saw (~a week ago?) was still at most a handful of QPS. Any nginx instance with default configuration serving static files from any modern compute

Plenty of places are pretty much normal. If you want normalcy, you need to go to it - it won't come to you at this point.

That's not what anyone is doing though. You can run Nix with minor tweaks to e.g. its garbage collector settings[0] and you'll quickly see it crash in various ways. Memory safety is a real concern in programs, not a buzzword. [0]:

Твикс - does that help?) It seems that North Americans struggle with the word, but most Europeans (including Brits) don't. Don't know enough about linguistics to guess why! Try saying "Twix" the way you'd imagine a

Yep, we'd like that, too! Our current thinking around the evaluator design incorporates the idea of evaluation with/without a Nix store, where using the language itself (e.g. to generate JSON structures or whatever) should be perf

Nix is a much older language than Dhall, this seems like a weird argument to me.

The background on our side is that we did do quite a lot of profiling and investigation of the current evaluator - last year, informally, over video chats and IRC. We have a bunch of logs and various perf measurements spread out over some m

No, we are writing an implementation of the Nix language. Nixpkgs is written in Nix and we believe that's the most important part of the ecosystem, so Tvix will support it.

For the core parts of Tvix we won't have any OS-specific dependencies, but each platform will need a working builder and sandbox implementation. I suspect that OpenBSD has at least one OCI-compatible sandboxing/containerisation me

The answer to that is to make the decision for yourself and then move to an appropriate area of the world where the policies match your decision. Some areas will stick to this for a very long time because it's now part of an identity f

Consumers don't really get a choice about this, same as with headphone ports. Every generation of phones is bigger and even if they buy the smallest of the bigger phones, the average still increases. Voting with your wallet only works

My phone is a Unihertz Atom L, I've had it for a few months now. It's a good phone. Not the lightest, but the screen is a comfortable size and it has the most important feature of a phone for me - a headphone jack.

Gerrit is probably high up on the "Most underrated dev tools" list. People don't like it because it really uses git (which people don't really like) and doesn't have a flashy UI, but it is so good .

There's nothing in the comment that "questions" CRISPR, it's just pointing out that due to the larger space of possibilities more care needs to be taken with it.

That's also not what they wrote, they used it as an analogy - in the sense that mRNA can express one very specific thing, and CRISPR can express a much wider variety of things. It's not about literal turing-completeness.

In Gerrit, the review unit is commonly one commit. IMO the Github pattern of bundling several changes in one review is a mistake.
