The author correctly capitalizes "iOS" in the article. Hacker News automatically capitalizes the first letter of submission titles, though.

I too was frustrated by Mail.app's lack of a proper conversation view. Turns out, there's a setting to show messages you sent. In the "Viewing" section of Mail.app's preferences, enable "Include related messages". http://imgur.com/i5Eaq

A more reliable way to navigate with the keyboard is ⌘+{ (back) and ⌘+} (forward). The chords ⌘+← and ⌘+→ can be captured by text input, JavaScript, or Flash.

Very slick, but also very slow. Occasionally I have to run a command twice for it to register. Also, it's strange that git's output isn't colorized, considering the "Success!" messages are.

Right, because a good way to fix errors on a web page is to change your operating system and browser. I am curious which JavaScript errors you're seeing, though, skrebbel. I don't see anything amiss in the developer console on Safari 5.1.7.

I think pilif meant that you'd have to wait for the progress bar (about seven seconds) to finish before you noticed something was wrong. For example: "Call the Drake Hotel in Toronto." *bling* "Calling..." (wait seven seconds) "He

Thanks for that. I ended up with a 4 Kb favicon that way, which is reasonable as far as I'm concerned. http://taylor.fausak.me/static/images/favicon.ico

The composite favicons made by the X-Icon Editor are way too big. The one I made was 32 Kb. I made it with four PNGs that totaled 601 bytes. That's more than a 50x size increase.

Mea culpa. I was confused because Conway's game of life has two states: life and death. Living things that don't move are still lifes [1]. [1]: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Still_life_(cellular_automaton)...

This symbol is not ominous; the glider doesn't die. It moves through four states, arriving at this steady state: XX X X X I'm surprised that the author wrote such a lengthy article without making sure that the premise is

That's technically true, but they don't need to. You can use the same markup as the @1x splash screens and target retina devices with media queries. I wrote a blog post explaining exactly how to do it: http://taylor.fausak.me/2012/03/27/io

That project looks amazing! Much more mature and robust than my solution. Thanks for the heads up.

It might be because they're using Font Awesome for the icons instead of Glyphicons. I don't think the developers are interested in fixing it, though: https://github.com/FortAwesome/Font-Awesome/issues/81

I understand that CSS' generic fonts must be given as an identifier. I was wondering why you'd want to give a specific font family without quotes. These are equivalent, but I don't get why you'd use the former: font-family: Helvetica

Nice post, and a good explanation of how CSS handles identifiers and strings. But I can't figure out why you'd want to specify a font-family without using quotes. To save two bytes?

This is pretty slick. A couple of tiny problems, though: it doesn't work in Opera, the dropdowns close immediately in Firefox, and clicking on an open dropdown doesn't close it again. Still, very neat. Even works on iOS!

The analytics for my blog look very similar to this. A 24-hour period of intense activity followed by basically nothing. I had a post reach the front page of Hacker News [1] and /r/programming [2]; it got around 10,000 hits. I reached the s
