The article makes me wonder: how much headroom do compilers of newer slow-to-compile languages such as Rust or Swift have for improving compile times?

Sometimes you have to look in the headers. I don't know why it doesn't get parsed into the docs. Here's the documentation for loadSimulatedRequest: /*! @abstract Sets the webpage contents from the passed data as if i

WFH needs to be mandated whenever possible. We have an existential climate crisis caused in part by constantly driving cars to and from work. This is more important than office productivity, and oddly, nobody is talking about it.

Doesn’t matter who came first, you can’t generate a bunch of smoke and noise. I’m sure Austin has a noise ordinance. Easy solution is to move the event to a better location.

I think we should ban the use of opaque algorithms to mediate communication between individuals. You need to be able to understand and predict the semantics of communication.

Obviously, there are various reasons why you can't "just use python or JS" for a particular project.

In many cases you can get away with just using a struct with a tag (no unions). Yes, it wastes memory, and isn't as safe as a proper sum type, but at least it's memory-safe for C++ objects and you can use a normal switch statement

C++ gives you enough access control so you can expose things just for testing if you want (make the test a friend, encapsulate the functions into another class). You can do this without breaking encapsulation. If the functions are capturing

I think I've watched that talk before. The starting point you linked to talks about when to do linear searches. Anyone with some experience knows that stuff. It's a good thing to tell undergrads in case they missed it, but Blow al

Well, this is about nice code to look at, not avoiding delaying the ship date. Moreover, here's approximately how I'd write that TGA loading function: 1. Write a function to load just a header. 2. Unit test the function with a hea

You can do that fairly easily with C++ lambdas. I think the primary deficiency, though, is that the functions aren't exposed for unit testing.

I was coding C++ (for graphics) in the early 2000s, and I (and I think most others I knew) would have considered it bad back then. But regardless, the topic isn't "C++ code that was considered good when it was written".

Yes, I am assuming that Rust isn't much harder to code in than Zig. Rust isn't that hard, really. Since your point doesn't really have to do with which languages are involved (only that they are different somehow), one could

Rust will be safer. Reasoning is pretty simple: a dynamic approach (Zig) will only catch the memory errors for the tested code paths. This is probably only marginally better than running your C++ code's test suite with address sanitize

Count me mostly a hater. OOP as typically done (C++, Java) is bad for two reasons: 1. Heavy use of reference semantics prevents local reasoning about code. 2. Inheritance is really brittle. A subclass can break superclass invariants. I don&

That's quite a dichotomy. Anyway, it's not about what I think, it's about what the recruiters thought. The recruiters probably thought (perhaps wrongly, I don't know) that they would find fewer good candidates at NC A&am

Actually, US News does seem to measure those things: Duke student-faculty ratio is 6:1. NC A&T is 18:1. Duke is #17 in Best Undergraduate Teaching. Seems for NC A&T that info is paywalled. Duke is #8 in Co-ops/Internships. This

"Did Hooli recruiters think that they wouldn’t pass the hiring bar?" Most likely, yes. In the US news rankings, Duke is #10 and UNC is #20. NC A&T is #281. NC A&T has a 46% graduation rate vs Duke's 95%. Duke engineer
