People loved React because of VirtualDOM. Now JS libraries advertise themselves based having no VirtualDOM. Can someone explain this to me?

I’ve not followed them too much but trust Moxie since his previous decision were good. I think Signal is trying to gain more mainstream adoption and it will need backups for that. The pin is annoying but if it gives the app secure backups t

I can’t help but laugh a sad laugh. I oppose government monitoring and support transparency. And I support Signal to avoid monitoring and now it’s used to remove transparency. I can’t get my friends to install Signal because they say they h

It is poorly explained. I had to read the about page. Instead of 404s, you redirect to a previous version of your webserver (that is still running), which then instead of 404s redirects to a previous version of your site (that is still runn

"Owning the libs": Politics is no longer about how best to manage the state. It's about how to attack the vilified 'other side'. As long as Trump does that, he does no wrong with his supporters. No longer a society

What's Microsoft's strategy? The AppGet saga has made me cynical. Start selling Microsoft products to the bought userbases? But I suspect Microsoft is targeting companies rather than the developers themselves. Cynically, the drug

Classes with one public function can be converted into a closure. Classes with two or more public functions can be converted to a closure that return those functions through an object. Then classes and closures become closer. Classes, of co

If the code could be extracted into generic top-level pure functions, I generally don’t unless its used in more than once in the codebase. Otherwise I find a number of contextless generic functions/classes without any idea of their use

A community based on geographic locality is the prerequisite for a functioning society and state. Anything that polarises that geographic community ultimately damages the state by attacking its precondition.

Disagree. It's different to normal society. Normal society encourages civility by offering the inclusion into a needed physically-near social group. Digital society deincentises civility by offering a multitude of alternative groups.

This press release encourages me to think China is covering up something. This /may/ be the case. But the FBI wants me to come to this conclusion. It seems a little fishy.

Thanks for posting this. Mainly because of the discussion it brought. Basically: airing of unscrutinised claims is propaganda, not news, even if done with both sides.

In person, people value civility to keep the shared benefit of social groups. In the digital world, you can easily find another group so lesser value is placed on civility. And that turns easily into the division you see in today’s digital

I doubt anyone enjoys targeted advertising. Any slim benefits it brings comes with the huge disadvantage of mass emotional manipulation for political ends. Upvoting is a difficult one. Undoubtedly it's enjoyable. But given enough money

It’s not binary. There are degrees. Filling your car with petrol and choosing to stay with a dubious firm are at opposite ends. The difference, to me, is your ability to avoid the complicity. It’s hard, for most, not to drive in their petro
