Interesting point about Orkut. I wonder if there is a Google Dating in the works. It seems to fit their mission of organizing and helping people search-- one of the most important search tasks in most people's lives actually. It's also inhe

Presumably it would work so long as vowels appear more frequently than consonants and typically are seen next to consonants. If you want to try a made up language, just create one and feed it into the program.

And let's not forget mongeese in Hawaii started out as just 8 little critters on a boat 130 years ago. The population is estimated to be in the millions now.

Very cool algorithm. I just implemented and tested it for fun: http://www.nashcoding.com/?p=51 Basically, all it's doing is tracking the letter with maximum frequency and subtracting 2x its occurrences next to every other letter. If there

Oh come on. Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps if you don't like that. Find a hot new language and play with it in your spare time. Start an open source project with it. Contribute to the community. Then apply to jobs with that knowled

I think that's a very good point. I got more done when living in a dorm room than any other time in my life. Even if it's just screwing around with a project idea at a dev house meetup, I get tons more work done (and have a lot more fun) th

I sense a bit of irony here: the guy who started HN is telling you not to waste your time by sitting around being unproductive... and you are seeing this article because you are on HN. :)

I like it, but I hate your logo. Who takes a bite out of just the bun? Also, by showing a hamburger, you made me think of fast food and I could see conventional restaurants balking at that.

Probably would be better to show the category tags beside/below the author/comments subtitle. I like it though. Rather than inclusive filtering like you have on the right hand side, is there any way to filter out the categories I don't care

Maybe something like UT or CS, where it's all over in 3 minutes, that's true. I remember being a kid and playing games like Tomb Raider where you would have to really think and work hard to unlock puzzles. Even games that offered you the op

How is Apple a research-driven company like what the author was describing? I suppose you could argue they are researching new designs for technologies, but really that's it. They don't tackle new conceptual challenges like Google did with

Didn't they do that? Otherwise the individuals would have a LOT more than a few genetic traits in common. Even if they did it though, the buzz-kill question still exists: are the results statistically significant? Is there a link to the act

I think the whole point is that some people want to go work for only startups. By creating a site where you know those are the only jobs, you attract that niche. The market for general developer job boards seems very saturated.

Ah, yeah I was assuming he meant this year (0% interest) plus 9 additional years of x% interest. I see now that I should have given him another year. Okay, so he only has to return 10% annually. Still extremely difficult. :)
