Much like Agile, or Hungarian notation. When a general principle becomes a religion it ceases to be a good general principle.

You gotta admit, though, that a language which strongarms you into writing classes with hidden state and then extending and composing them endlessly is kinda pushing you in that direction. It’s certainly possible to write good code in Java

Haven’t tried mpv but VLC is my go to for weird formats and streaming from random rtsp cameras. Maybe it’s outdated but a couple of years ago when I switched over from libffmpeg to libvlc it was because some cameras on site had weird auth p

Yep, it’s like those security screws, they’re not used to stop you opening the box, they’re used to prove that you knew you shouldn’t be opening the box.

Reminds me of high school when people were buying expensive locks for their lockers. These locks, no matter how tough, all still locked onto a flimsy 1.5mm steel hasp that you could bend with your fingers.

Hah, I love this sort of story. Recently I was on site and we needed some electrical as-built drawings. They’d been stashed in a tool box, which was locked (and pretty well designed to protect the padlock from bolt cutters / angle grin

Yes, if only a tiny amount. The example I use is a toilet cistern, when explaining this to children. It’s probably the closed loop control system with which they have the most firsthand experience, so they understand it best. Also toilet fu

How do you get a role like this (even with the 10 year head start) without owning the organisation? Very few places I’ve worked have the kind of long-horizon pragmatism to invest in this kind of role.

True, but these core concepts are very cyclical. Every 7ish years there’s a new coat of paint on an architecture that was invented at Xerox PARC or before.

Trying to translate this terminology into normal Aussie speak here. :P So a “heat pump” is reverse cycle aircon, I’m guessing it’s usually a central unit ducted to each room? Am I right in thinking that “mini split” is what we’d call a “spl

I spent my teens explaining to my mum that main memory (which used to be 'core', she interjected) was now RAM, a record was now a row, a thin client was now a browser, PF keys were now just function keys. And then from this basis

Pro tip if you're trying to deal with any of these: Do it while it's cold . Do not (as I did the first time) gird your appendages in towels and other random shielding, then do it in the mid-afternoon when it's been warm for
