Because maps are a core use case of a smartphone hence Apple needs a good implementation.

It's hilarious how many people fell for Google's PR efforts. Street View is great for finding faults in existing data but the fact is that it is the same old mapping/directory companies that do most of the work.

Apple chose not to license from third parties. That is what happened. Here in Australia Google licenses map and POI data from Whereis/YellowPages. Apple doesn't and it shows.

Did you even bother to read the article ? The advantage of Lightning is that it is a REAL future proof connector. Completely generic and separate from any current standard. A connector that could still be in use 10-20+ years from now. And t

It's good thinking building a completely generic connector that doesn't adhere to only one standard. So that if <insert new standard> comes on the market Apple could support it without a change of connector. You couldn't do that wit

Well that was completely unnecessary. Apple Maps works great for me because in terms of quality of data it matches Google. Remember that there are lots of cities in this world and not all of them will be missing lots of data.

Right. Because corporations can't lobby to get legislation passed. I will never understand people that bash unions. They serve an important counterweight in society.

Why does this nonsense keep being perpetuated on here. Steve Jobs routinely launched products that were less than perfect. Hence his quote, "real artists ship".

Or (c) you actually don't know as much about Apple as you think. Apple has routinely released 1.0 products that contained major flaws in one way or another. It's just that Apple polishes those flaws so they aren't as glaring. And they've be

Actually most of Google's POI data comes from established companies e.g. Yellow Pages. For whatever reason Apple has chosen not to seek out the same partnerships. Maybe they will get round to it. Maybe they are hoping for a true crowdsource

Pretty simple. Apple can do what Google does. Buy/license data from third parties. You didn't think Google created all of it did you ?

Not necessarily. While your desktop can handle 8 connections the 3G connection can't.

But most web designers would be slicing PSDs at some point, right ? And Cygwin is a joke. Dealing with the page separator differences alone would make it unbearable.

OSX, iPad, MobileMe, Motorola iTunes, Retina MBP etc. All have had major flaws in their 1.0 release. The only people who say "Steve wouldn't have let this happen" are people who know nothing about Apple or Steve Jobs. Hint: "real artists sh

I don't know what it is about Apple that invokes such delusion. Apple has had plenty of unpolished 1.0 releases including a pretty big one - OSX. I am wondering if it's because of Steve Jobs death that is causing people to almost look for s

None of this is true. Google doesn't own their own POI database they license it from others and to date Apple hasn't approached these companies. So it isn't about the POI database. It's more about the fact that Google was withholding data f

Actually this could be bad advice in the new model. You see the App Store search is still at its core just a Lucene index. In which case the weightings are likely to be similar: titlePhrase 9 / authorPhrase 9 / subjectPhrase 9 / genrePhrase

I am not saying it is useful only that it is not a game changer for most people. Even in Japan you can use apps like Hyperdia for the JR and subways. The iPhone predates the official launch of Google Transit and at the beginning didn't have

Google Maps doesn't have ANY public transit directions in most countries. So you guys from the US need to stop acting as though this feature is somehow a game changer. It will almost exclusively affect US users only.

Then again I've heard that the Japanese have this magical invention called an "app" which someone can install on their phone to add new functionality. I've even heard that there are some ones already for say the Tokyo subway.
