TBH, I'm surprised they had almost 2000. I would've thought they'd be around the 500 mark.

What does the EU have to do with any of this. The article is riffing on a wacky and impractical idea a PhD candidate had. The bottle cap thing was irritating the first few times, but really isn't that big a deal. AFAIK, the EU has no c

That's the cartoon the Language Log post is commenting on. It's even included at the top of the entry.

I was with you right up to the last sentence. There is no "larger political program of obfuscation" here", just sloppy use of terminology.

No, it's neither. A creole is defined by its origins: it's a complete language that has developed out of a pidgin.

No, it's not. A researcher might an average Joe, but that doesn't mean that the average researcher is the same as the average Joe.

Look, if you're going to get picky, it literally is at least an order of magnitude faster. And in addition, Hz for Hz, the eZ80 is much faster than the Z80A, which is what people would actually be comparing it to.

Tcl's magic is mainly from uplevel and upvar as they allow you to do crazy stuff with the callstack to enable all kinds of metaprogramming. It's not a lot of magic, but it's very powerful.

A Pollyanna is somebody who's cheerful and optimistic to a fault , i.e., even when it's unjustified. The plot summary of the book is likely not what you should be reading as it's become an idiom. Something like Wiktionary or

Fine for me. I just got a HTTP warning and nothing else. ~~I believe Android uses toybox, not mksh.~~ It does use toybox, but toybox doesn't appear to include a shell.

Not if it was done competently. Shar files and the likes shouldn't contain NULs, even if they contain compressed data. The appended data should be binary safe.

Obviously the likes of Juniper, NetApp, Sony, Netflix, &c., know something you don't. Also, FreeBSD is fairly heavily used in Germany.

I recommend the Consent-O-Matic plugin. It automatically rejects consent on almost all sites I interact with on a semi-regular basis.

No, Utah is less than half the size of Spain or France. That's vastly less than the size of Western Europe. So, while it's an impressive accomplishment, it's not "size of Western Europe" impressive.

I had to make a point of getting a company phone. If I didn't, it would've meant allowing my employer's IT department access to my phone, including the ability to read arbitrary data and to be able to wipe it. That's a b

That's not Turing complete. That's still primitive recursive. You're going out of your way make it loop for a really, really long time, but it's still guaranteed to terminate, and thus isn't Turing complete, even if

I've a similar question to GP, but from a slightly different angle. I can see the attraction of using a Turing complete language, but on the other hand, an important properly of a build system is that it ought to halt at some point. So

I wouldn't say that Dulce/Dilsk/Dillisk is 'lesser known' at all! And along the west coast of Ireland, it's also commonly eaten, and works great as a flavour enhancer in stews.

Reduce, reuse, recycle isn't nonsense, but good sense. What is nonsense is how the fossil fuel industry uses it as a shield to avoid taking responsibility for the damage they do to the world.
