If the protocol was properly designed, the proprietary nature of the server wouldn't be an issue as we could write a server implementing the protocol too. For instance, I don't have to worry about all of tarsnap being open source,

Well, I guess all that talk on the BSD Now podcast a few weeks ago was nonsense then? I'll go back listen to them again and pick out the episode along with a timestamp, if you'd like. Anyhow, I'm not referring to the OpenBSD

IIRC, there's work going on in FreeBSD port its multithreading patches up to the latest version of pf. Hopefully the extra resources brought by Solaris using pf will help make that a reality.

The protocol is published, and the client is open source, but the protocol has a whole bunch of design issues, and that's the real problem with Telegram.

WhatsApp's security improved an awful lot back in November when it got end-to-end encryption. MTProto has... issues. It uses IGE (infinite garble extension, a variation on the accumulated block chaining - ABC - mode of operation) as it

That's a bit different though. It's typical in Ireland and the UK to refer to mainland Europe as 'the continent', whether they consider themselves European or not. The likes of the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Cyprus, Malta,

DANE has its own issues though: by itself, even if you're using DNSSEC with it (as you ought to be), you're essentially shifting trust from CAs to registry operators, your DNS service provider, and whoever operates the root zone.

LZ77 is pretty trivial as compression algorithms go. Go take a look at this video for a explanation accessible to non-developers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goOa3DGezUA

The downside of .ico files is that the format doesn't support compression, so those files can get quite big.

Yup, but you need to take into account semantic confusion by a native speaker of one language with words in another language. In this case, peterfirefly might have been thinking of 'se souvenir (de)' and mkesper might have been tr

You might want to prefer population density over population as a metric: the population density of the UK is _much_ higher than that of the US. IIRC, this is true even east of the Mississippi. Pasture is probably higher quality in the UK th

They needn't have been so bad: one small change--tilting the pins at an angle--and they could've been mechanically sound like Aussie ones.

We used to use Schuko plugs here in Ireland, but switched to type G plugs for convenience and trade reasons back in the '60s. I think my grandparents' house still had some Schuko sockets about the place. Personally, I'm not t
