> iOS and Android have no relevance in this discussion as they are not real OS'es... And that's how it will remain. This sounds seriously shortsighted. So far, Android and iOS are focused on media consumption, but I'm already starting t

All three of his points seem reasonable to me. If people can take online courses in place of traditional university courses, it's no great leap of imagination that a handful of professors will teach many thousands of students. That's not ne

That's more or less what they did when they were selling Ubuntu laptops before. It seems that despite the warning, enough people unwittingly bought one to cause headaches for Dell. I imagine their margins are thin enough that even a few ret

KDE is famous for making everything customisable. But the market for skinning software isn't that big - most people will never go looking for that feature. So it's much more important that it looks good by default.

I've noticed that the top 3 most requested packages to port now all have Python 3 coming in a release soon. (Django, matplotlib and wxPython - from the poll on the python.org homepage)

Secure Boot adds protection against certain classes of malware. It's not complete protection by itself, but it's blocking off one possible kind of attack.

You will still be able to run any software on your computer once it has booted, the signature is for the bootloader. So this would only be an issue if Wikileaks for some reason had to implement their own operating system. Even then, users w

So they're releasing two versions that look much the same, but one of them can run all of your existing (x86) applications, and one of them can't? That sounds like confusion waiting to happen.

The OS knows, at some level, the orientation it's displaying the screen in. So in principle, there's no reason it can't use subpixel rendering appropriately. Although it might be hard to achieve - I don't know how the graphics stack works.

This raises an interesting question: where is the line drawn between 'freemium' and 'free trial of a non-free service'? Your mention of prompting after a set number of logins suggests that you're offering the free tier as a taster, rather t

I think the complaint was about games where as you progress, the time cost increases until even the most time-rich player isn't prepared to keep paying it. Advertising these as 'free' is kind of disingenuous, even if it's technically correc

The missing bit of that is the actual profit . The praise of the world's hacker community does not pay off the mortgage. On the other hand, if it's open source, anyone can compile a client which doesn't show their ads, and give it away. Do

I would assume Amazon can negotiate with local carriers in each region, rather than paying through a US carrier for data sent to Australia.

But that's not a "delivery fee", which makes it kind of dishonest. Amazon already take a fixed 30% cut, which ought to include any subsidy on the devices.

Yes, that's right. On Linux, you already have readline installed. But neither Macs nor IPython can ship with readline itself, because of the GPL, so by default you get the inferior libedit. The Qt console doesn't require readline, but it do
