I don't know what there is to keep up. email realizes a basic concept of open, federated, async, text based communication. it has its flaws but it's as useful as it was.

sure. but most sds don't make as much of a fuzz about their work as data scientists. and from what I can tell, the average work of an sd is more challenging than that of a ds.

most data scientist are just jupyter notebook and sklearn cowboys who know a lot of the buzzwords but lack even basic statistical understanding. and I've met a lot of data scientists.

I also try to look at software development as some sort of brain jogging or solving puzzles because I actually tend to neither care about the actual product nor do I care for hyped up new technology.

you name it ... looking something up in a book takes much more effort than just googling. that's why there was a stronger incentive to memorize.
