Ah, you're right. syscall(2) must have been moved to syscall(9) on OpenBSD when the syscall function was removed and pinsyscalls was added.

It's not like array languages don't do any optimizations... Denying the programmer the ability to be clever by manually writing loops makes some things easier and simpler for the compiler as well.

That's the syscall(9) manpage, not the syscalls(2) manpage. syscall(9) is present on BSD as well, and on my OpenBSD box points me to sys/syscall.h which has the syscalls. On linux sys/syscall.h is empty and includes asm/

It is somewhat documented. man 2 syscalls tells me they are defined in /usr/include/asm/unistd.h. That file include /usr/include/asm/unistd_{32,64}.h, which contain the definitions on my amd64 linux b

Yeah. I remember thinking it was old and boring as a kid in the 90's... Have children born after the millennium even ever seen a newspaper, let alone read the comics?

Nope. Schoolhouse Rock, multiple Monty Python films, The Last Samurai, The Magic Schoolbus, Romeo and Juliet... but never any Charlie Brown. Oh yeah, and The Sandlot. 2 or 3 times I think.

The reason so many people with aphantasia don't realize until adulthood is that we do everything you do. There's no real difference in capability, many things are identical or very similar, but the mental experience is different.

I definitely have memories linked to smell, but I can't imagine or remember and pull them up on demand, I am reminded of them when I detect that scent. I can make myself imagine/remember sourness though, but not other flavors. J

In Celsius, my daily life uses values from ~ -20 to +30 for the weather, but from ~0 - 90F. For cooking both are equally arbitrary, as the only place I set or read a temperature when cooking is candymaking, setting the oven, or cooking larg

No. I will wince or look away, because it is uncomfortable to see people experiencing pain. But I don't feel pain, I just feel emotionally uncomfortable due to seeing people in distress.

No. I can imagine just fine without visualizing. It's the same as "thinking". Posit a sphere of radius x. Why do I need to see to imagine that?

People use Discord and Slack because they have to, not because they want to. Having to keep 10 chat apps to somewhat keep in touch with people is a sign that something is very, very wrong. People use gmail because it was free and in the rig

Honestly, I don't think anyone would raise much of a fuss over changing distance measurements to metric. Both centimeters and inches are easy enough to eyeball or rule-of-thumb, meters and yards are basically the same, and larger units

I always took the Deus Ex Machina in Harrison's books to be just more of the satire. He never really takes his settings or characters lightly, but the presentation is almost always aimed at comedic effect.

We still live in a golden age of music piracy. It's easier than ever to download anything you ever wanted to listen to without paying a cent. It's just that keeping music locally fell out of fashion and streaming is so easy.
