This is getting ridiculous. Apple is NOT trying to oppress or control people. They're not even trying to rip people off; that's not how they work. People are upset because Apple makes something amazing that masses of consumers want, but t

I used to be on Facebook quite a bit. I deleted my account a week ago, and the abrupt change felt surprisingly liberating. Facebook was becoming a chore to manage, but I didn't realize this until after I left. Sems like there's still room

Nothing that moves. (Or talks. Or does anything but sit unobtrusively in a corner waiting to be glanced at.) The only ads in which I've ever been sufficiently interested to click, even out of curiosity, have been Google text ads.

I'm expecting Google to roll in and take over any day now. Social networking almost overlaps with their existing turf already. I seriously doubt Buzz as it exists now is as far as they'll go. We're clearly moving to a more federated syste

A successful musician told me this once: "Put 110% into everything you do, no matter how unimportant, otherwise when the time comes that it actually is important you won't know how to do it." I see some variant of this in every "advice to y

It's hard for me to feel the same way about a Google-sponsored open source project as I do about Microsoft's commercial ventures. Maybe it's just the masterful PR, but I really do believe Google is actually doing good here.

The more abstract the better! I love category theory. Curry-Howard isomorphism blew my mind when I read about it; that's the sort of thing I'd like to read about. Do you know of any good treatments from the lambda calculus perspective?

This is reassuring, because for months now I've been searching and searching for a sort of "mathematician's introduction to computer science". Something precise, concise, with elegant and efficient constructions and rigorous argument... po

I suspect it has to do with differentiation. By trying to make a product too similar to an Apple product a manufacturer would open the door wide open to valid criticism about being an Apple knockoff company. By doing something different, t

This is nauseating. Not to say arithmetic is a useless skill, but we should not be focusing on teaching kids things that computers can easily do. At a certain point, "higher math" becomes about coming up with original arguments and explain
