Much like the other Beej guides, the target isn't that tightly constrained. This aims at POSIX options, and attempts to cover gotchas for cross-platform code. Not to mention that just because you're only developing for Linux doesn

I wonder if the survey question was something misleading like "Do you prefer to spend time looking through cooler doors or at an LCD TV with programming for you?"

My experience with Pixels has had them last about two years, plus or minus a few months. Always used a case, and the phones did not expire from direct accidents but thinks like the charging port failing (yes, I used a non-conducting tool to

Vim's major benefit is that commands are composable. For example, `d` means delete -- but delete what? Well, that's based on the motion command you supply, from lines, to the end of the file, or even looking for a specific charact

Does your sense of your senior dev pay include considering your benefits? Back when I was an underpaid junior dev, I once had my employer go and attempt to convince the software devs that we were making money than we thought via a statement

I actually had a desktop motherboard, purchased about 2003-2004, that did this. Mind you, as it slowly succumbed to age (capacitor plague, most likely), it would start repeating "No CPU Installed, No CPU Installed..." as I watched

Assuming the binary on the disk hasn't changed opens to time of use type attacks, where an "evil disk" is substituted that changes the binary after the first load. (Or, more likely, some sort of rootkit) Unlikely, yes, but th

This seems like a bit of the perennially-linked "Choose Boring Technology" bit. Your corporate landing page/blog is unlikely to need anything fancy. This is true especially if you aren't in tech, while the article focuse

As someone replied to in the comments there, Apollo adding a mandatory subscription -- which doesn't sound like what the dev wants to do, anyhow -- is basically just doing a passthru subscription to Reddit. It's the same sort of t

Dying notes are a fascinating thought, and relate to some of the cruft aspects I've seen with any sort of task-tracking. That said, in my usual note-taking app, I have things like recipes I might make once in a blue moon, and I'd

As best I can tell, Reddit's limitations on posting NSFW with Reddit hosting the image or video are implemented client-side, and unevenly across their first-party clients at that.

From what I can see, Firefox deprecated the old add-on structure in August 2015, and the statistics then were ~15% usage for Firefox -- well into its decline from its heyday.

You might be one of the "lucky" folks whose nails grow faster than average, then. That said, the article suggesting cutting once a month seems a bit on the long side to me, too.

Sounds like you might not need it. My fingernails seem to be unusually tough, so this intrigues me. The no-brand clippers often have trouble with them, and the one time I had an in-grown toenail the doctor had to get a stronger pair of cut

Cutting nails is for shortening them, not cleaning them; while a month may be on the long side, definitely I try to clean under my nails daily and usually do more extensive cleaning with a nail brush (or toothpick, if I'm out of town)

Pre-installed is the closest one will get to "works with Linux" from the larger manufacturers, so I evaluate it on that basis. Though sometimes it turns out they're using some obscure binary driver or even just an open source

As someone who helps maintain some discussion mailing lists for a small non-profit, mailing lists "work" inasmuch as the email is accepted without error by hosts that, if you're lucky, just route it to spam.

Where I am I've been fortunate that the weather alerts have generally been for critical situations such as tornadoes. The Amber alerts, OTOH, have been usually across the state and of debatable usefulness[0]. 0: https://www.
