Steve Yegge's blog entry "Rich Programmer Food" is about why Compilers is the most important real CS class. Great read. http://steve-yegge.blogspot.com/2007/06/rich-programmer-food...

On the surface, your argument has intuitive merit. However, you don't sue a business unit (Youtube), you sue a company (Google). Google is profitable.

Don't understand why "netbooks are going the way of the dodo" and "the race to the bottom will make them disappear". The race to the bottom will shake up the market and make the industry more competitive, but shipping cheap netbooks that lo

RAD = rapid application development, the business term for "drag-n-drop GUI builders" that we all know and hate. Not having one for the Web is a valid criticism, but if GWT can handle Swing API input then we DO have one.

It would have to be Windowsy, unless Chrome has its own internal windowing layer that's a suitable general abstraction. I assumed that "windowing environment" meant "window manager" not "GUI toolkit" anyway.

I have to disagree -- $50 is 20% of the price of the cheapest netbooks, and it's 10% of the price of relatively expensive $500 netbooks. The cheaper netbooks get, the more of an issue $50 is. The Eee PC was supposed to be the $200 laptop an

YouTube is not the only site with Flash video on the Internet. The handful of sites you could name and point out special-case apps for still will not cover the set of interesting sites with Flash video on the Internet.

I remember in sixth grade when they revealed to us that "3 \cdot a" and "3a" were additional notations for "3 x a" (three times a) and encouraged use of those notations on homework, I happily wrote "a3" as well because multiplication is com

(Could've sworn this was in C++ FAQ Lite, but I can't find it) The language specifies exceptions as a feature, not an option. Turning off a language feature and how that works with other features that may reference it is a heavily compiler-

I would not advise this style of programming, because it creates a very tight binding between the application logic and the interface. In fact, it's exactly the problematic style caused by GUI builders that generate event handlers and ask y

The problem is that learning to think this way in general makes you habitually write things like x >> 8 instead of x / 256, which makes your code hard to read for no benefit if you're using a compiler that was written sometime in, o
