And just like we have spermicide to go with condoms today, we might have aminoglycoside-based topical microbicides to go with condoms tomorrow.

I think you're confusing P(member of particular race | member of particular religion) with P(member of particular religion | member of particular race).

I used gnuplot for the charts in my recent paper originally, but we switched to Excel for the latest version. EDIT: my advisor likes it better, and it actually makes really pretty graphs.

The article didn't do much to support the "Three Felonies a Day" thesis. More support for the tired, more general "laws are bullshit" refrain, but not for the thesis in the title.

Article's headline is misleading. Facebook was the vehicle for good old fashioned actionable offenses of the "harassment/defamation/libel/slander/whatever" flavor.

There is a much easier way to fight the MySpace angle: remember that if you can't at least see a woman's upper arm in any photo and you're on a free online dating site, you can assume that this is not due to an oversight.

I completely ignore names other than pg, a personal friend or two, and names on my confirmation-biased list of obnoxious karma whores. I don't make a mental note of "X must be a smart character" when I upvote X's comments.

I'll be surprised if you tell me that the end result isn't usually undergraduates who can produce mediocre, unidiomatic code in any of 6 languages. (I've no personal experience with Berkeley grads, just general cynicism.)

If you're reusing that nice general list you wrote ages ago with static inlines so that there isn't any function call overhead anyway, it's trivial, because you change the "get next element" and "get prev element" functions and never worry

No one legitimate is going to do this because of the legal risks. No one illegitimate is going to do this because it's probably not as profitable as building a botnet.

That's too simplistic. Programs with hot code sections that don't fit in icache are slow programs. If your program is huge but you spend all your time in a small fraction of code (typical) that fits in icache (no idea if that's typical), it

It sounds like you're saying that society does not have a diminishing marginal utility of money, and/or that they shouldn't have axed the golden investment opportunity for everyone (had they IPOed). Is that right?

Are you claiming that money does not have diminishing marginal utility? (i.e., the famous "s-curve"; it's in AIMA but I can't find a convenient picture with Google.)

Both opening the file and checking whether it exists involve a syscall, which dwarfs the overhead of throwing and catching an exception. If you check whether it exists and then try to open it, that's two syscalls.

I didn't say you have to know the documentation, and I'll admit I'm behind on how much of it IDEs show you. In my recollection, you generally get a list of language-level constructs and that's it. For example, the names of those exception

Relying on the IDE to know which exceptions can be thrown is nicer I think. No. If you can't remember what it throws, you can't remember the documentation. If you can't remember the documentation, you don't fully know how to use it proper
