Surely, no real person is going to produce the exact same sound twice. Check the database of previous samples for matches or very close matches.

It might be nicer if you made them say "yes" so that replays could be detected. Pressing 1 makes the same tone every time, so malware on smartphones can easily bypass this authentication method.

No, we have made something to the effect of "interference with any digital protection scheme that can be construed as controlling access to a copyrighted work" a crime or a tort, and we did it 11 years ago.

Agree. I wasn't even upset, and now I get "all future premium software features" for free. I will be downright happy to part with the remaining 90% of the purchase price.

Not exactly timely; the competition started in September 2009. There are well-known algorithms for mining association rules; see, e.g., http://www.eecs.umich.edu/~klefevre/eecs584/Papers/agrawal_1... .

I'm not a lawyer. Is it the case that because the contract specifies a (financially nebulous) penalty for its breach, there can be no other legal repercussions for breaking it? Actually adhering to the first clause seems difficult. As I'm s

While it could compromise privacy, I didn't see anything outright evil on that list.

Speaking of the iPhone/iTouch app, I would love to see a caching HN app. I read NYT on my iPod Touch (without wireless) most days when I walk to/from work, but I would switch to a substitute news source rather than pay.

During my typical day, 0 people attempt to contact me by phone, and I spend almost all the time bathed in wireless connectivity. I am out of touch for a total of 40 minutes when I am walking to or from work, and perhaps another half hour wh

I bailed out of the cellphone market after my last contract expired. I'm on Skype Out ($3/mo) + Google Voice (incoming calls go to voicemail and I call them back) + iPod Touch until a compelling reason to enter the market again shows up. Id

Another interesting one: gears.google.com does not redirect to google.com/gears, which is a 404. Contrast with voice and talk. Discoverable URLs clearly aren't a priority.

Counterexample: google.com/dumbass is a 404. Searching for google.com/dumbass returns results. "Did you mean: Google It You Dumbass" is not kosher.

If it's not too late, adding "(like del.icio.us)" to the title would make it obvious that this is not a post about DNS security.

I'd say it's a safe bet that stealing Google's source code wouldn't help much with replicating their datacenter infrastructure.

It doesn't seem to have occurred to the author that bot authors may not want to be identified. This is an adversarial setting and needs to be tackled as such.

Impossible? Danes write dates as dd-mm-yy according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calendar_date , so your birthday can have at most one leading zero and thus is >= 10100. 9973 is the largest 4-digit prime number, and 9973 + 2 is 1) n
