It is easy to dismiss these vulnerabilities from a perspective of a common desktop user. "I already have privileges on this box" or "any desktop user already has a way to escalate privileges." But X11 is also used in process control settin

"Look at this debug port" is spot on, and relevant in the case of the bodega ATM. It's a WinCE single board computer behind a pathetic lock. Pointing out the silliness of the design is relevant. The theatrics that followed? Not so much.

Welcome to the security conference lifecycle. Step 1) What's something important? (SCADA / Smart Grid / Air Traffic Control) Step 2) How likely is someone to catch me on the details? (Low) Step 3) How dramatic can I make this sound? Step 4)

Agreed. I got excited, because it looked like a way to get Sublime-friendly features in a remote terminal, but all the macvim-centric bindings look like a blocker. Still, it's a great reference for Vim plugins that can bring Vim closer to

Funny coming from unfinishedman.com, which is the blog people go to when they look at The Sharper Image and think "but what do you have that's REALLY frivolous?" [1] http://www.unfinishedman.com/aviator-wing-desk-inspired-by-w... [2] htt

It's a lot better read than the PCGamer article, considering that it points out the negative metagame aspects of Time Dilation (TiDi). Part of what made that battle a slowly increasing shitstorm was the fact that reinforcements could arriv

The recently discussed http://mindmup.com works beautifully for me for this -- I just start lobbing the features and head noise into nodes and organize until some watershed where I realize I know what I need to do.

Python's "2to3" utility helps a lot with the mechanical parts, like spotting renamed modules or print statements. After that, it's a chore of hunting down small semantic changes involving strings. Since everything in Sublime Text should b

@tiborvass's client is 10 months old. How it handles Hyperdex's data structures works well, but some of the API's have changed and the client's handling of hyperclient_loop looks like it can enter a fast busy loop when it should idle. I ha

Comparing Hyperdex against Cassandra and MongoDB is appropriate. All three are distributed databases with secondary indexes and an emphasis on consistency and scalability. The other two databases you mentioned are not in the same problem d

An acyclic graph (or a tree structure) enables certain automatic layout algorithms. These algorithms are predictable by the user and are less distracting -- the key goal of any mindmap software is to not distract. There's probably a semant

Great work on keeping the interface concise, consistent and keyboard friendly. Overcomplex UI has kept me from using mindmap tools in the past, since the tool becomes a distraction. A "yank" and "place" for nodes would be a nice feature, a

I disagree, slightly. Mockery is sometimes the only way to make the powerful, oblivious or powerfully oblivious pay attention. I agree that it is not a reasonable tool against someone who isn't hurting anyone.

A quick scan of the project source doesn't suggest that "it makes my eyes bleed" was a fair criticism. It isn't going to cure cancer or solve deep problems, but who cares? The world is full of projects where people just snap a few cogs to

Hyperdex 1.0rc1 shows a lot of promise but calling it a release candidate is premature: - the unit tests use an old api and schema -- they flat out don't run - the disk storage primitive was recently replaced, in its entirety - the network
