Back in the early 90's I bought a $30 VCR from some no-name foreign brand no one had ever heard of here in the US. 1/3 the price of the name brand stuff. Then I went to Seoul and saw that same company brand on top of the largest

I'm a hardware engineer. I agree with you about patterns and mathematics - also beautiful, but cold (sorry, best I can explain it). But when we see a complex physical problem , and then see a nicely designed and implemented real-lif

Yes, my personal pet theory is that something really smart made a 3D printer-like life machine, and then gave it to thousands of other not-so-smart individuals - who then came up with all these crazy and inconsistent life forms on Earth.

Well, I was just explaining why I used the word beauty . Maybe whatever created these gears was being tortured by an evil master until it made something satisfactory. I really can't say for sure...

Engineering beauty. Like a Saturn V rocket, or an AC induction motor. Things that make you proud to be an engineer.

It is for beauty like this that I believe all living things were originally designed by some intelligence, somewhere. Perhaps designed to mutate and evolve, or perhaps that was a limitation in the source materials, but there are some bea

If you know the high school and year(s), you go thru the friends list of every person on Facebook who did post their high school from that year (or nearby years), and does show their friends, until you see her face. That's only a c

WOW. Forget the Photoshop stuff, this needs to be integrated with 3D printing immediately . Spit out a design file into Tinkercad[1] for some minor adjustments and BAM, you've made a printable 3D model. [1] https://tinkerca

That's a good point. From the article: I’m also guessing that despite its more homebound nature we’ll see that fingerprint sensor very quickly on the iPad too. The iPad is a perfect shopping tool and one-scan shopping would make that

So, after studying this for the last four hours, I've come to the conclusion that Apple is NEVER going to implement NFC, and in fact is trying to intentionally nosedive the technology into the ground, as a way of hurting the competitio

The scanner scans subdermally, so it's a little trickier than just lifting fingerprints. I don't deny that it's replicable, just saying that the hacker would probably only have info on one finger.

Or a Kickstarter selling replica Bin Laden fingers. 10,000 of those would keep the NSA quite busy. (I guess you'd need a live terrorist's finger to replicate though. Those NSA types are pretty smart.)

The battery life is fine nowadays, it's a mature technology. They now send out a small pulse a few times a second, and then watch the decay on their own antenna. A change in the decay rate means another resonant antenna is nearby and s

Honestly, to effectively market this technology in today's waters, they have to say that it's kept local. If they send out 8 bytes of your fingerprint data hidden in every picture you take (so your fingerprint can be regener
