I've noticed that at smaller shops - IME - choosing a new language wasn't frowned upon. However once you start getting into very heavily used production services, choosing a different platform becomes increasingly difficult.

That's how you build hype though. I like Rust (haven't used it in years though) but the marketing hype-train is one of the most effective I've seen - perhaps other than Java in the olden days.

Right, good point, all you get from the WG website is the working draft, which, as you pointed out, is almost always virtually identical to the published one that costs $$$.

I don't understand, why are the PDF documents specifying the C/C++ standards being sold for $$$ when I believe I was able to find them on the respective WG website?

Note: Before I possibly get railed for not knowing functional programming or anything like that, I actually really like functional programming, for a limited set of applications (mostly compilers, and other algorithm heavy stuff). > What

I haven't used Ruby in ages but this seems like a really odd way to incorporate type hints in the language. I much prefer the Python 3+ approach of type annotations in source code. I can't imagine having to look at a separate file

Inb4 the press release says "Machine learning". Honestly, do we really need to consider TikTok's rebuttals about them basically being spyware? Sure, they spy for the CCP, but Facebook spies for the highest bidder. Not sure wh

The Amazon Kindle has a touch e-ink screen. You can use it to read books (mobi format) or browse the web (albeit in a very limited fashion - but I use it to browse HN and works fine).

I am desperately waiting for semi-high refresh rate (20Hz-30Hz) e-ink displays so that I can replace my traditional HD display with them. They're significantly easier on the eyes and they're a joy to use. I don't particularly

It's rare that I've run into such issues when using Python for building trading algorithms - most of the overhead (for me) seems to be building a strategy using the data that you have available. Numerical computing libraries such

Assuming a unsigned byte, that range of values is between 0 and 255 inclusive, so `len(arr) <= 255` is correct.

That would be hilarious and full of irony. Given that most FANGers are obsessed with cash, I'm pretty sure they'd say "yes" to risking their career for some sweet BTC.

While this is technically true, using old, unsupported versions of software (such as etcd) in production is a recipe for disaster, especially when you start running into problems with it. I think, in the case of etcd, it would have been bet

Well put. In general, the concerns for "massive scale" manufacturing that manufacturers like Honda and Toyota have are simply not shared by Porsche, who are known over their entire existence to manufacture < 1000 cars for a lot

Can't be that hard. On Apple though, your app might be taken down fast if you end up doing that. Doesn't mean you won't fool a few suckers though.

I think it was a fair reply. Linus's contributions to Git, while basically 100% of the project initially, were not sustained over as long as Antirez's contributions to Redis.

While this is true, I think Git is quite different. Linus has said that he's not really a "VCS guy", so apart from high level architecture and high level concepts of what Git actually is as a VCS, he hasn't really had as

What will be interesting to see is how Redis fares without Antirez. He was the heart and soul of the project. It also makes me think, what would Linux be when Linus decides to step away? I kind of don't want to think about it. Thank yo
