This is good advise. As an aside, I run an ESP and we've seen a marked increase in the number of domains using a DMARC policy. Our users have to set up soms DNS records to add our service as an approved sender.

I have mild tinnitus. When I move my jaw forward the sound intensives strongly, and then fades when my jaw relaxes. So there is definitely a connection for me.

Positive for me would be that a domain is free, so a false positive is a domain that seems to be free (no NS record) but is in fact taken (because it is registered but nothing has been added to the DNS). But you're right, my wording wa

A very quick and safe way to check if a domain is in use is to query for NS records (e.g. $dig ycombinator.com NS). This will give some false positives though.

If you use DMARC, your domain is less interesting for spammers, because lots of providers will now bounce the emails they send using your domain.
