Electric aviation always strikes me as an odd idea, given the low power densities that batteries achieve. By contrast, biofuels are available today and can be made from agricultural waste products (2nd gen), in bioreactors using salt water

Attibuting any specific catastrophic event to climate change is hardly possible, though. Arguably, climate change is already playing a role in conflicts around the world. The arab spring (and therefore the ongoing war in Syria) was partly t

Slightly tangential: Does anyone know how Uber was able to skirt Taxi regulation in the US? Did they actively lobby, or fight this in the courts? It's something that I've always been curious about, since this was a big problem for

When I pay by card in a restaurant in Germany I always leave one or two Euros in coins on the table. You can also ask your server to include it in the bill and put it on the card. It would seem quite rude to me not to leave an tip at all.

Like the comment above pointed out, no obligation to tip doesn't mean it's not poor form not to. I'm German and I always tip unless the service was really bad. I'm not the only one. [0] Quick Googling confirms this is tr

Where in Europe are you talking about? Here in Germany, and everywhere I've traveled so far, tipping is expected. You just tip less than in the US. I guess you could not tip, but your server will be miffed and assume something was wron

That's interesting - for me it was the first time seeing it explained that way, and it immediately made perfect sense. I think the intuition behind is that, when you initially choose one door out of 1000000, you are almost sure not to

That's not true for Germany, see my comment above. Germany has nearly completely replaced nuclear with renewables, and is now (slowly) phasing out coal. Coal has been mostly constant with a slight downward trend in the past 15 years.

That's totally false, where did you get this from? Germany is a net exporter of electricity [0]. Nuclear is being phased out and replaced by renewables. [1] Yes, that totally sucks for CO_2 emissions... [0] https://de.statis

Cool setup. But if you're incrementally sending snapshots to a non-ZFS host (S3), your S3 storage will keep growing indefinitely, because you can't delete any snapshots from there ever, since they reference each other. Correct?
