Reading the rest of this thread, it seems that the anti-anti-natalists (to which I gravitate more closely) are misrepresenting the anti-natalists' view and that they don't actually expect everyone to be anti-natalist?

Right, I overstated the implication. More people deciding not to have children does not lead to extinction. It's just that when people say things like "not having kids is good for environment" it comes off as a moral prescrip

Indeed, give the environment a fighting chance :) The absence of people with bad ideas won't help as much as a surplus of people with good ideas. Since even if we had half the people they could still pollute like crazy.

The environmental argument against kids insults me (not that you should care). As if it's a binary choice between preserving the environment and preserving our species. I like to think that humans of tomorrow will find ways to solve pr

Orthic has a much greater economy of strokes, so it's as much about convenience as it is about speed. That is, you can write quite quickly without actually rushing. It also does not take long to learn because many of the consonants are

Oh yes, and it takes up way less space, so it is very economical, you can cram a lot of notes into a single page of a pocket-sized notebook

I use Orthic to jot down notes. It has been perhaps two years since I implemented it. I view it as a tradeoff - it is way easier and faster to write… but harder and slower to read. This is why I use it for brief notes primarily. Perhaps the

I use the shortcuts app on the iphone to create a widget that , on a button press, records a dictation, transcribes it, and appends it to a note together with a timestamp.

I think you are right about the eyesight part. Though I think what you did there indeed is unfair, you made it sound like “screen time” can only mean “passively spoon feeding endless low brow entertainment.”

Why is screen time singled out as an undesirable form of sedentary activity for children when it is just as sedentary as, say, sitting and doing homework?

Seems like a spectrum, if you stay too close to the familiar, you will be boring. But if you deviate too far away from the familiar, you will be confusing. A nice surprise lives in a sweet spot somewhere in the middle. Like the very narrow

Indeed! Plus, whether something is surprising depends on what was expected in the first place. So you have to create some shared expectations first, right? Some kind of buildup?

I heard an analogy that goes like this: As a driver, all I want to see is current speed and RPM. But I like knowing that my car tracks a hundred other things, too, because when it fails, those other metrics will come handy. Or alert me befo

Good point about education. Child labor is ugly when it either forces children to do something they don't want to, or it's too hard on them, or it deceives them into thinking it's the best choice they got, or robs them of the
