1984 is especially interesting since the generation before mine in the Soviet Union would've only been able to read a manual copy of the book. My father was lent such a copy for one night. I'm thinking of copying it out in the dar

A related principle: when given a choice between a subscription and a one-off purchase always take the subscription until you've paid the price of the object. Most of the time I cancel the subscription, so the principle pays for itself

Couldn't you implement this by consuming `self` on `next()`?

I've started using Calibre for these purposes, saving papers from arXiv to it, and can definitely recommend. It takes a bit of manual effort to add tags to the papers, but once you have a bit of a collection going they autocomplete. Th

I was under the impression that 10x isn't in terms of speed of coding, but rather value added to the business, including proposing/implementing solutions that weren't in the spec to begin with but open up new possibilities. S

My impression is that this is to bootstrap adoption, there is a Swift-native TensorFlow package being developed also.

There is a system of supervisions, that is a bit like doing homework and going over it in a private (1/2/3 students to one prof) lesson once every two weeks. Sometimes the questions would be standard for a course, sometimes the pr

Presenting '{' on newlines feels like a bit of a strawman to me, I'd expect the more verbose styles to still look something like if (a == b) { return 0; } else { return a < b ? -1 : 1; }

Do you have a list of these strictly-better things to do and a plan on when to implement them? Do you let them pile up? Mostly asking about your decision-making process.

I'm not sure how to train machine learning models before defining metrics. I wonder how many other approaches/tools make metrics unavoidable. I think the key here is not marrying the metrics, and being happy to swap them out.

Funny how the argument about veering into the unnatural numbers is voided by a Maybe type.

People who build on Electron should understand the technical tradeoffs they are making. On the one hand, they get a cross platform app, on the other, they have an extra Issue in their bug tracker to move to another platform, with occasional

My first job out of school was writing a spell checker/auto completion system. If you want to weigh predictions by the expected number of keystrokes saved. This is a bit like the opposite problem, find the longest word D that is a supe

Don't the rows have to have the same number of elements? In that case it's more like a matrix of strings.

As an aside: The ML-ML/MachineLearning and JS-JavaScript/Jane Street interpretations makes comments on anything even tangentially related harder to parse. Reason coming in and closing the loop has not made this easier. I wonder wh

I do, and I don't think I'm the only one. There is no hint of the bars continuing below the axis, and the effective result is the impression that the relative difference is larger than it really is. Even the gradients seem poorly

What is the full range of values? I find it easiest to think in terms of an angle of one of the corners, so 0-90 in degrees. Note that the graph only covers half of that range, somewhat arbitrarily. The important realisation that the ratio

I have a feeling that this would be much easier to understand using trigonometry. For a unit hypothenuse, you're trying to maximise sin(θ) + cos(θ), which is the case when θ = τ/8, giving √2. Given that we cut a corner, the longes
