I am sometimes surprised how work on optimization (unless explicitly demanded) is regarded negatively. Just do it anyway. No it does not add to my salary but it does wonders for my self-worth and work satisfaction.

It’s funny but I have made the opposite transition recently. The reasons: Writing parsing code by hand tends to be verbose, error prone (such as off by one errors), ad hoc, and full of temporary strings. Editor syntax highlighting (and als

You can and should do both. What I wrote above is a job a manager has to do every now and then, not the fun part, but also hard to evade.

In general, if you want your reports to accept company decisions, it is in your interest as a manager to align your stated opinions with company policy. Openly disagreeing, or just trying to take a neutral position will only reduce faith in

Edit: never mind this comment, but can’t delete anymore. Don’t remember where I heard this. If your brain does not get exposed to the ‘right’ set of hormones at the right time while you’re in the womb, your brain can develop a different gen

I set my laptops to hibernate when the lid closes. Entire RAM written to disk, then a full powerdown. Do turn off wake timers and wake on USB (sometimes disabled in true hibernation but not always).

Perhaps if your design does not improve stiffness? The way it’s phrased suggest that that is a necessary part of the design.

I don’t either. But somehow TDD is considered the sanctioned way to work with unit tests, and that it is almost pointless to write tests unless you’re doing TDD. I am relieved to read that I am not the only one.

Couldn’t you make the same argument about fiat currency? Both in regular finance and in defi there exist funds that do high stakes gambles with other people’s money.

This is a great point. But how about if the language would allow the programmer to specify what range of values is expected for function input/output? Then a compiler could try to reason about the computation and decide that overflow d

I also type multiple languages, and I make more typing efforts than average, in which case autocorrect really goes nuts. I turned autocorrect off a long time ago. Slower but at least I have control over what I write.

Well most physicists assume it is massively bigger than we can see. It is in principle possible that we see nearly all of it, but that would be very coincidental. The only thing we know is that it is at least as big as we can observe, but i

For “deep zoom” applications, such as microscope slide images or a “google maps” app, I can imagine that developers get the idea to let the browser do the panning/zooming. Then you could run into limits like this. But he should have te

Exactly. Idiomatic C# code does not depend on finalizers to release resources. Finalizers are typically only used as a last resort to prevent handle leaks, it is only memory deallocation that is nondeterministic.

This is related to an idea from data oriented design: Split up your data such that each piece of data needs exactly the same transform, and do all those at once.

This is an area where machine learning could make a positive impact to society. Have something like GPT rewrite/review all public facing text. Preferably a required rewrite, which is published unless it is factually incorrect.
