At a small research facility long ago, we were reprimanded for not storing our data on the server. “What if it crashes and your work is lost!” Within 3 weeks the server had a harddisk crash. There were no backups.

Nice project. Tip: for high quality CRT photos make shutter time is equal to a multiple of the refresh period. 1/60th, 1/30th, 1/20th and so on.

I think he’s right. Hover menus are slow (often you need to wait for it to open), and if you accidently hover just before trying to click something, you will click on the surprise menu, not what I want to click.

As far as the ISO is concerned, IT business is just one of many businesses for which they manage the standards process. ISO has to pay the bills somehow, don’t they? If they would not charge the users of the standards the bill would go to g

> dBase was THE first commercially successful DBMS in computing history Is that true? I worked only with PC’s back then but I’m sure that the “mainframe” computers of the day were doing mostly database workloads. Think banks, insurance c

That’s a useful addition. I was thinking it is kind of pointless to have this indicator that only tells you that something might be wrong when it is too late. The article does not address this aspect if I’m not mistaken.

It’s quite possible that there were way less items in the store on launch, or during testing. Then it could easily be overlooked. Of course no excuse to not fix it later.

I can second that recommendation. Contrarians do get their mention in the course albeit briefly. It also gives fascinating insight into the different sects of judaism in that period.

It sounds like rollback could be used to cheat by artificially delaying your outgoing network traffic: the other player has less time to respond. But I doubt I’m the first to get that idea.

I thought it was a cool technique. I used lookup tables for image decompression, I’m curious if this technique would apply there. In the start of the article, you exclude conversions that don’t round-trip. But I would guess this technique w

Please don’t downvote this guy, or the other crypto proponents, when they try to explain why they support it. I think the idea here is to have open debates with them, not run them out of town.

By far the best ergonomics advice I got was: do what feels natural to you. For me that’s a trackball, and home row typing with my lower arms resting on the table. I have had episodes where I was dangerously close to RSI, but after that last

For best effect you can insert bracketed additions, and add a SIC to point out the spelling error the author did not choose to fix.

This is easier to reason about if it’s not about your own code. Consider this: would you swap your own codebase for your competitor’s if you had the chance? For me, it’s a resounding no. I bet it’s the same from their perspective.

That 8.6 figure comes from the paper linked below [0]. It’s an average. For many benchmarks, the difference is less than one percent, for others it’s 20 or more. In the freebsd article, they see around 1%. [0] https://www.microso

I second your observations on JPEG. It turns out that you can use the same code to skim through jpeg, lossless jpeg, Jpeg2000 and jpeg-ls headers. Impressive in it’s simplicity.
