I'm surprised Canada has such a large shadow economy. My guess is that a lot of it is restaurants/bars + cannabis.

"Totally untethered individual freedom is unknown in East Asia" Where in society does 'untethered individual freedom' exist? I live in Canada, a very 'free' country, yet there are many rules and laws to follow.

The point is to secure more funding to run better and more complicated studies. If you wait around to publish the perfect study, you'll never get started.

It has little to do with statistical understanding. All psych students are required to study stats, and review the study design before starting. It has everything to with a more systemic problem - publish or perish. Students and professors

It's pretty refreshing to read posts that admit 'management is difficult' on HN. We can get a bit lost in our bubble of tech work, and forget how important management is to actually accomplishing things.

Not really - If you managed a small team at a company, you've still got management experience. Bigger companies will recognize that regardless of title.

I think this explanation makes sense? The source of the noise at any given moment is where the tire is (or has just caused) the strip to vibrate. That point is moving away from the observer about as fast as the car is moving away from the o

Oh I definitely agree investing in cycling infrastructure is still worth it. I'm very happy my city has many bike paths and a bike sharing system. However, the reality for most Canadians is that above all we need public transport that

Not an option up here in Canada. Biking is not viable for about a 1/3 of the year. Ice, snow and low temperatures make biking extremely dangerous. My city is known as being extremely biker friendly, yet virtually nobody bikes for 4-5 m

"Annoying your visitors may be dumb" By what metric is it dumb? We've found that our chat widget dramatically increased contacts, conversions, and is often used for support. Personally I am not a fan of annoying chat widgets,
