JungleDisk offers all of this for 4$/user/month.

Yeah, but it: (a) requires paid licenses, and (b) runs on a troublesome OS. It's also an absurd waste of time and resources just to convert a text format. I'd just as soon run it through Google Docs and scrape the result, etc.

I suspected as much. Microsoft seems to have started from the GUI and worked their way down to an API.

That's silly: if it's an open standard, I can migrate off of it. If it's a single-vendor closed alternative to open web protocols, I'd be worried. Now that at least one very popular browser has no Flash support, I'd also worry about that.

On point 1 above: self-hosting is not necessarily the answer either. It really depends on the underlying architecture.

I disagree. A Flash-based presentation layer is a liability, since it's vendor-locked.

A few criticisms from someone who has tried everything in this market: 1. Security is a weak point. From their FAQ: "Documents uploaded to crocodoc are assigned a unique, unguessable URL (e.g. http://crocodoc.com/gQlo2g ), which you can

Filing a patent != having a patent. The Sony device is clearly prior art. I had one of those Sony's, BTW. I can't believe anyone would compare this device favorably vs. an iPad. That's willful ignorance, I guess.

JungleDisk + S3 will lock network shares at the file level. In theory, you could accomplish offline access in JD with syncing, but I don't yet trust their sync features for anything critical.

While I agree with ALL of the OP's points, I also wonder why any serious engineer would even bother reading these kinds of requests in the first place. It's usually obvious within the first few words whether a potential client "gets it" or

When Engine Yard and Heroku offer this kind of service, all you hear about from corporate IT is vulnerabilities in the VM layer and lack of security in the "cloud". But when Microsoft offers it, it's the next big thing. So sad.

You get what you pay for. Google Apps for Enterprise is $50/yr. Not sure what you pay for feedburner, but the bottom line is that Google doesn't sell support. You email them and you wait. If it doesn't work for you, go elsewhere. It's o

And how many of these same IT managers route every last piece of corporate email through Postini? The hypocrisy and FUD in corporate IT is out of control. Most IT managers today are survivors from the days when "IT" was basically a blue-col
