If a company does something that is right, but loses money, shareholders will sue it.

Hinckley Point does not need to be economic by far. It is more about nuclear weapons. UK as a country needs a new reactor to keep its nuclear arsenal. They made that clever deal to let the energy market subsidize the military.

GrapheneOS and CalyxOS might have slightly less tracking, but are similarly anti-User as they do not grant any higher-level access to the user (root for example), and similarly enforce app authors' arbitrary restrictions against the us

In what respect is "having power" different from "controlling people"?

And to add insult to injury, you as the user do not get to have a root account. Yes, there are ways to get one, but even the "alternative distributions" go out of their way to make it extra tedious for you. I would for example exp

Paranoia is not the problem. The problem is general hostility and not being open to other viewpoints and ideas. Also I feel some kind of power hunger, which makes me feel really uncomfortable surrendering basically full control over my phon

It is not controllable at all: It still enforces any app author's will against the user's. Root is not offered, and the grapheneos maintainer seems to be personally offended by the thought that root could be helpful.

I had hoped the risk for malicious actors would be a bit more serious than ostracisation. Like, criminal persecution?

But graphene does not let you do anything more than AOSP, specifically it does not trust you enough to let you have root while using a locked bootloader.

The advantage of app backup is that you can restore the apps to other devices. And you can selectively backup and restore subsets of apps. Nand backups do not offer that. Furthermore your assumption might not be true in the first place: L

That is exactly the problem. Fuchsia's license is more free only for developers in the short term, as lacks provisions to force developers to keep it free, in the end this will significantly reduce users' freedom. If Linux never h

The SoC vendors are doing this on purpose, in order to increase sales. Planned obsolescence. They will not change that without significant pressure.

Sony? Who promise only 2 years of security updates on their 1300€ phones, which turns out to be only 1.5 years after their usual delay to HW availability, and for most of their better phones they never provide any open source support? Nope.

It is not only about hardware. Lineageos re-uses binaries from the original image. The modem still runs original binaries. The bootloader is also original. Plenty of space to hide backdoors, possibly disguised as bugs.

Because manufacturers choose to make a crappy kernel fork with hacky drivers. So it's on them to provide updates to that crap-kernel. If they instead made sure their drivers are in mainline, they could just use official current kernels

Not only firmware. Custom ROMs actually have to use binary blobs in kernelspace and userspace as well, in order to be able to use the hardware.
