Considering the idea I was trying to convey with the word "cog" was "trivially replaced by any of the dozen others we have laying around"... yeah, at least a minimal level of specialization is a "precondition for no

Much of the process revolves around trying to ensure everyone on the team can tackle any problem in any part of the codebase. This is accomplished by doing all work paired, rotating pairs daily. Similarly the consultants assigned to your te

The question of what version of the OEM system image to use isn't always super clear. I've definitely seen situations where rom devs will mix and match whatever it takes to get their desired results.

I so desperately want to use MicroG, but keep having to go back to the official framework. The handful of apps I use that rely on Play (Lyft, Transit App, One Bus Away) all insist the Play Framework needs to be updated.

The entire android rom development ecosystem feels that way to me. Lineage is a bit of an exception with fairly solid and well documented build system, but for by and large, XDA feels a lot like the 90s warez/cracking scene. Lots of re

I'm not sure the ESP8266 is a great way of accomplishing the goal of being able to know what's running by just looking at the code, unless the Espressif has suddenly opened their firmwares and toolchains. An AVR (like an arduino)

If you're just working with a golang binary, you shouldn't be using an Alpine container, you should be putting the binary in an empty, from-scratch container. Go binaries are typically static and don't need distro or the libs

If you're using straight passwords, sure, an ssh key (ideally in a directory) is going to beat a password-only login, but that ssh key is still subject to credential theft. I'm in the process of migrating an environment off of ssh

None of these statements are inherently true about NFS. They may be applicable to some deployments or applications of NFS, but they don't hold generally speaking. NFS is used heavily throughout HPC for workloads that don't require

This works, but it leaves all traffic between the CloudFront edge node and S3 unencrypted. In theory, that shouldn't be an issue, by why risk it? A better way is to completely leave the "website" bits of S3 off, and leave tha

If my ISP can cache my traffic they can censor it - and do. Only if they can forge a cache-hit, or block a cache-miss from passing through. Something content addressable (like IPFS) would allow an untrusted party to provide useful cache.

I completely agree about the software on Hildon based Maemo devices, but Meego on the N9 (Harmattan/QT based) was downright gorgeous, and managed to see some quality official apps for services like Facebook, Twitter, and Spotify.
