I was extremely frustrated with my machine learning class because of this. The notation used was hazy. Also if you ask me, probability theory should just be squashed and the ideas reformulated with new more consistent syntax / symbols,

I've met many who've jumped ship from both companies and a common narrative is they were all just fed up with feeling like they were a cog in a machine.

> "we never really understand higher mathematics, we just get used to it" Correct me if I am wrong but I believe this statement is attributed to Von Neumann. It has really stuck with me over the years, just because of how true

Probably not, but it provides a chance for us to discuss his many accomplishments. A true genius. My personal favorite mathematician, Turing is a close second. The ranking might be flipped depending on my mood in a given time period.

I took linear algebra, performed adequately, and the only time I ever found it useful was when I was trying to get a grip on OpenGL. After hanging around a lot of indie developers I discovered that having knowledge of low level graphics pro

Yes, I totally agree with you. I never got the logic of directives like, write a 20 page report on such and such etc. I'd rather have the instructions be something like 'ensure that your final report has X, Y and Z'. Although

Homeworld is the only major one I know. They just released a remaster on Steam though so I wonder how this has affected the modding community.

It is not. IMO it's a pretty ballsy and idiotic thing to do. That's partly why I am not too active on Twitter. I have a lot of controversial, unpopular opinions that I wouldn't want a potential employer to get a whiff of.

I don't know who said that, and while I strongly agree with it in principle ... in practice it just tends to not work out like that. Employers want a cog in a machine. They don't want you to 'stretch, grow or learn' on t

More or less agree with this. I'm also a Google reject (didn't make it past the phone interview). I didn't take the rejection personally. I don't see how the interview process could be drastically improved. They get a lo

Thanks, I will look into that. Incidentally, I just booked an appointment with my psychiatrist in two weeks - I intend to bring this entire issue up.

IMO the truth is somewhere in the middle. A lot of people tend to underestimate the extent and pervasiveness of 'make-work' in the economy. But then again there are lots of vital but rather onerous tasks that would never get done

I tried a cocktail of SSRIs for 3 months each and none ever worked for my anxiety. I'm not a fan of benzos given what I've read here and heard in other places. Also, I doubt I'd be able to easily obtain them. Nevertheless, my

After the tough time I had trying to stay afloat in my undergrad, I don't think I'd venture to hire someone who was unable to complete a degree (just being honest with myself). I agree though that most actual learning occurs outsi
